Gwen, don't you know that nobody in comics is cancelled anymore. They just get put on hiatus until the next "event", so see you in six to eighteen months

While discussing a comic scene where the heroine explicitly talks about the killing of characters in comics, it's not a derailment to bring up the common trend of killing characters off in Events and to mention one in particular as an example. She was on topic.

Yep. AA is the most blatant example in that it was sold as a Hunger Games/Battle Royale ripoff where the premise is "teen characters get killed off" but it's not like it was a one-time occurrence.

If Gwenpool does ever fade into obscurity she's exactly the type of character who would be brought back to get killed off as a way of showing "the stakes are real".

It's not and the potential death she's talking about is her book being cancelled, not her death in a hypothetical even. But nice reach.

She was explicitly talking about death in an Event. Third scan, fifth panel: "what, are they going to be the new ultimates or something?"

Next panel she laments that they probably won't even get that, just disappear. But the implication is still a sort of Sophie's Choice: either disappear, or be brought back solely to be killed off.

I'm hoping next issue discuss potential third or fourth options. Maybe living on in fanfiction, or in a comix book Limbo that is pretty much the same as their normal life. If we operate within the context that comic book characters are sentient, then there is no reason they require the reader's gaze to persist. Who says we have to stick to baby logic, where something only exists while we are looking at it?

I don't think the Ultimate thing was about them dying. Gwenpool was likely talking about Ewing's Ultimates.
I took it as "Will they be allowed to be in a team book? Nah, they'll just never appear again"

Not that many years ago.

At any rate, isn't there some sort of maxim about not learning from history? Like: "If you think that the shock value of killing second and third string characters will sell more comics than taking the time and intellectual effort to develop them (even after a decade of this proving false), but you won't allow the status quo of your marquee characters (or ass-pull pets) to change over the decades, you aren't a very good writer, and are slowly killing the industry"?

I think I got it wrong, but it's still -pretty- true.

You're being a touch pedantic, but I will indulge:

How long is long enough?

How long is too long to labor over mistakes made? How soon is too soon to forget the mistakes you have made?

Can you quantify this? Is any definition you could provide anything but arbitrary?

Can we compile a definitive list of mistakes Marvel has made that we should remember, and a list of those we should forget? What are the criteria?

It's too long to grumble over Avengers Arena? Okay.

What about Civil War?
The death of the Spider-Marriage?
The ham handed shoving of mutants to the back of the universe?
The still more ham handed shuffling of NuHumans into the void left by mutants?
The death of KidLoki?
Norman Osborn: Director of Shield?
The unstoppable march of Events?
The Hood: Kingpin of Crime?

And that's just Marvel.

This, I would suggest, is why fandom culture adopted the aphorism "Your Mileage May Vary".

Then there's DC.
I'm still mad about Countdown (and the general treatment of the JLI)
And War Games (and the general treatment of Spoiler)
And Identity Crisis
And reverting to Hal as the main GL
And reverting to Barry as the main Flash
And reverting to Babs as the only Batqirl
(Seriously, there have been so many resets to the Silver Age that I'm amazed Dick isn't Robin again)
And the abandoning of everything I like about the DCU with the Nu52 (so far Rebirth is a Batman and Superman shaped band-aid on a universe-wide wound. Even then you still have the damage done to supporting characters like Tim Drake and Kon-El)

That only works if they are either at least somewhat close to being main characters, or very long-running (like, at least Silver Age long running) supporting cast. Supporting casts that are any younger than 30 years usually end up as worm food in one of those Events that use a body count to pretend to be important.

I really liked the scene where Batroc kicked down the door but didn't make any sound because Gwen grabbed all of the sound effects.

It shows that while Batroc doesn't necessarily understand Gwen or how she sees the world, he believes in her and is making an effort, and has thought about how they can work together (and how to take advantage of her abilities)

He really is the best dad, and it just further highlights the tragedy that Gwen is feeling since other writers probably won't treat Batroc with this same amount of respect in the future.

Very few writers give Batroc ze respect he deserves. Mark Gruenwald was still one of the best, when he wrote Cap vs Batroc way back in the day.

I had this weird idea about Gwen's series being "cancelled," but it would in actuality be a saga about her trying to find a life beyond her series and winding up in poorly written fan comics.
