Ed Piskor: I put a tweet out there and said Marvel should let me make whatever X-Men comic I feel like making. [Axel Alonso] got in touch pretty immediately, and asked, “What would you want to do?” I immediately thought about “Elegy,” because if this is the only Marvel thing that I ever do, I want to draw it all. I love the X-Men, it’s my favorite comic, it’s kind of the only thing that I know, and only up to a point. When you were done, I was done. I was thinking about “Elegy”…

Chris Claremont: If only I’d have sent Axel that tweet. That would have made life a lot more productive the last five years.

Piskor: It’s funny how that stuff works.

Claremont: My laughter’s probably a little different from yours.

If it helps Chris you probably wouldn't have gotten that offer five years ago.

This series is, honestly, utterly amazing. The first issue is stronger than the second, but then it has stronger stories to draw from (all the flashback materials of the Claremont era, versus the original Lee/Kirby/etc run of the book in the 1960s and early 1970s).

If you do pick it up, I'd recommend doing so as floppies rather than digital. The colouring, the paper quality, the design work... it's a wonderful treat.

How big are the floppies? Looks like the collection is going to be a big 9x13 treasury size though 30 bucks still seems like way too much for a softcover with two newer issues and X-Men #1. Sort of seems like it ought to be a European-style album hardcover at that price.

The floppies are 40 pages each (no ads).

Sorry, wasn't clear. Are the pages bigger than a normal comic?

Ah! No, standard size. The paper quality isn't standard, though... a deliberate "old school" pulpy kind-of feel... and the covers are gloss. So it's a prestige format sort of concept, but size-wise sticks to standard.

Well, the age disparity between Jean and Xavier really makes things seem creepy.

In that pic of the Brotherhood (like how it's JJJ who gives them the "evil" name here), who is that in the top left? I recognize the rest, but I don't remember him back in the day.

The idea of the O5 donating food to the Morlocks is such a good idea I want to see a full issue based on just that idea.

This is a really neat sort of "fill in the gaps" retelling of the X-Men's history. Though did they just retcon out Vulcan entirely? Because I can totally get behind that....
