In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Netflix Saint Seiya series won't debut until 2019... >pout<

The new "Black Lightning" TV series launches today on the CW in the US and on Netflix in the UK, and looks to be well worth a look, going against the usual CW grain by having the main character be an African American male in his late 40's (He's still VERY easy on the eyes of course, the CW wouldn't drop ALL it's rules) and his two daughters (Who comics fans will know as Thunder and Lightning). It's getting good reviews too!

You know what I'm not going to post anything else in this column, the above may be slightly ON topic, but it's so nice to actually see such a thing as a Black Lightning tv series be a thing, I'm just going to end on a high.

Feel free to let the subject matter ebb and flow as it always does!

Nigel Farage, Mr. Toad himself, has been saying that he wants another Brexit referendum. Why do I get the feeling it's less about politics and more about him realising that the EU is his gravy train, and without it to rant about he'll be forgotten entirely?

He's needing to cover a lot of legal fees in a hurry, and even the prospect of a 2nd referendum -in which he gets paid for a lot of columns, speaking fees, and donations for being a horrible example of a human being- is a quickie fundraiser for a rabble rouser like him.

We've got a little snow here. And suddenly my back garden is covered in birds!! I have sparrows, blackbirds, thrushes, a pair of robins shouting at each other from opposite ends of the garden, bluetits, siskins, but no hawfinches despite this talk of a hawfinch invasion. Oh well, can't have everything. I just hope next door's mangy, scrawney, bedamned moggie doesn't take any of the birds. I wish people in the UK would learn how to take care of cats as pets, i.e., not an outdoors creature. cats are an utter menace.

While the other side of the US freezes, we're having balmy, sunny spring days already, and all the birds are out and confused.

Also, I've adopted a pair of geriatric cockatiels, and when the crows cause a ruckus in the yard, they'll mimic the crows' cawing.

A construction company's started work on developing the field behind the house, which wouldn't be so much of a problem (I can always walk the dog somewhere else) if they weren't using some dodgy methods.
Namely, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy method of "the plans were on display, in a place no person could know about unless they were actually looking".
There's been some angry grumbling going on with the neighbours, who really aren't happy, but given the workers have already started digging stuff up and cutting down trees, it's probably not going to solve much.

The BBC's approach to balance resulted in an... well, I'm not sure I have the words for what it was, on Friday's edition of the News Quiz, where there was a Daily Mail "columnist" on the show.
Naturally, there was lots of childish blustering about how dare the show make fun of Glorious Supreme Leader May reshuffling the cabinet... on a satirical news show. On BBC Radio 4.
It sounded like some (or possibly all) the other people present were about five seconds from just walking out. Or, in some cases, lynching the guy.

... On a much lighter note, I've been playing Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 the last week.
As someone who enjoys alternate realities and time-travel, I quite enjoy it, even with a few quibbles and the blatant hand of Synergy over everything (Looking at you particularly, Inhumans).

If you heard Oborne on LBC tearing into May's reshuffle, it sounds like he was playing a character on the News Quiz.

It did make sensational, if uncomfortable listening. I'm going to make a point of catching the Extra download.

Saint Seiya is not the only thing that won't come until next year.
New Mutants being postponed to 2019 really bummed me. Of all the super hero movies to be out in 2018, it had to be the one I wanted to see the most.

Finally watched Made in Abyss. A great anime, and a punch in the guts too.

Hoping Saint Seiya was delayed so they could get the rights to that Bowling for Soup song.

Happy Amazon got rid of the double paywall on most of their anime now that Strike is gone. Was able to finish RE creators over the long weekend.

I'm wondering if New Mutants will be reshot/recut to downplay the "Stephen King meets John Hughes" feeling that Stranger Things has perhaps overdone to popular culture.

And "Stephen King meets John Hughes" can work without being too derivative. Fox might want to downplay any similarities, so people unfamiliar with the Claremont's New Mutants run won't say "So, they're doing Stranger Things, only ALL the kids have powers and there's a demon bear."

New Mutants will have Cannonball, which is a little puzzling. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 will have their version of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who pretty much IS Cannonball, only a girl and can't fly.

I read somewhere that initially they wanted to use Cannonball in Deadpool, but balked at the FX cost of doing his powers...hence the new Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

Lightning never really got all that much role in the comics (she was mostly just part of big teams I think), we didn't get to see her as much as we did Thunder (who was a main character in Outsiders) and not really with her family, so they have a good opportunity to establish a lot.

Characterwise, this looks great.

Bombed all last semester's exams, school politely informed me I'll be getting the boot if I don't shape up this semester. Still haven't worked up the nerve to actually fetch the exams and see what exactly went wrong (though I've got a general idea...).

I need to ask you guys something.

I know that Netflix's Jessica Jones and Daredevil are extremely tough on heart and nerves. But, what about Luke Cage and The Defenders? Are those shows gentler on the audience? Less depressing?

Date: 2018-01-16 09:10 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] scorntx
Cage and Defenders are definitely less "need to go watch kids cartoons to wash away the crawling feeling" than Jessica Jones.
But Cage can be kind of rough to take all in one go.

Defenders... is definitely gentler on the audience, and a heck of a lot less depressing than any of the other series. Danny Rand even manages to be more tolerable, and the shorter length is definitely in its favour.
Y' might need to have watched at least some of Daredevil and Iron Fist to understand what the heck's going on, though.

From: [personal profile] mrwalker
I second the idea of needing DD season 2 and Iron Fist to really be able to follow Defenders. Makes me wonder if season 2 will focus more on the mysterious source of Jessica's (and Luke's?) power.

Also agreed about the vibe in Jessica Jones. I haven't felt that way since I read 1984, and technically Jess WINS...

Luke Cage is a lot more optimistic in the sense that a lot of bad stuff has happened (and happens in the show) but there's also a strong sense of community and resilience. Iron Fist is a less difficult and depressing storyline all round, and The Defenders is generally a lot lighter.

You need to at least spoil yourself for DD S2 and Iron Fist to know what's going on, but I really enjoyed The Defenders.

-Cut out most shots showing female fighters/pilots and female officers commanding people around/having ideas.
- "General Leia's" is censored from the intro "General Leia's resistance fighters". It's just "resistance fighters" now.
- Lots of little cuts reducing the number of female facial shots. Too many to count. (Pun intended.)
-For example, when there’s a scene where a woman is cut in making some important statement that can be substituted by another statement by a guy, then she gets cut out. Works pretty well actually.

You can't possibly believe this had any chance of being any good.

I'm looking for something I came across on this site a few years ago and I'm interested in checking it out. Unfortunately while I recall the plot of the comic (or at least the part scanned) I can't say the same for anything helpful like the title or writer.
The plot was about an immortal woman, relating her experiences to a young girl, such as helping cavemen hunt, and how she first appeared during the formation of the Earth.

Can anyone help me figure out what this is, or already know what this is?

What an insane week in the US.

Large chunks of us have been hit by major winter storms.

Turns out Hawaii is NOT a smoking crater ... though it was pretty believable considering some recent political events.

Trump continues to be Trump. Y'Know, if he paid off ALL the women who knew damaging things about him then he could really stimulate the economy.

Stan Lee has been added to the men accused of harassment though, given a number of circumstances, I suspect he may have some kind of dementia.

I think Aziz Ansari might just be a creep though. The second season of Master of None is all about how damaging the sexual harassment of women is ... to the innocent men caught in the crossfire. Shame, I liked his stand-up.

Finally have a working phone again after being without service for two and a half weeks because Sprint is terrible.

The Stan Lee thing might be overblown.

First there's the fact that the reports track back to the daily mirror, which is well known to be disreputable.

Second nursing agencies usually handle this kind of thing internally, rather than going to the press. If female nurses were having a hard time they'd switch to male nurses, and take a few other steps.

There are a lot of suspect things about the accusations but, if taken at face value, we have a 95 year old who people noticed strange behavior from right after his wife died. I've had dementia and Alzheimer's in my family before and I know it's common for one spouse to cover for the other.

Worth noting that Stan Lee has been accused exclusively by the Daily Mail, a "newspaper" so worthless that gossip tabloids look down on it, and that has been banned for Wikipedia from outright making stories up. As far as I know, not a single reputable source has joined the accusations.

Of course accusations should always be investigated. But I'm at least waiting for more confirmation than the Daily Mail's.

Didn't the Stan Lee accusations end up coming from the same nursing agency that he was suing for stealing cash from him? I'm certain I read that somewhere, so it looks like it was more just a retaliatory action. I just do not know where I read it, so I cannot be sure.

Trump makes us nostalgic for GW Bush.

Still, I'd been meaning to watch the Letterman show. Maybe I'll do that now that I'm done with the previous Doctor Who series.

Bill Nye's Netflix show is actually pretty good too. I mostly overlooked him as a kid. I'm much more familiar with him as the guy that has to explain things to adults (especially political figures) as if they were children
