In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

A little later than usual due to stuff going on, but still in before midnight GMT, so it counts.

Minnie Mouse got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a mere forty years after Mickey got his.

India's Supreme Court has ruled that sex with child brides (Underage marriage is technically illegal but still happens) is automatically rape

After things calmed down a little after they introduced a new, white character, to appear in their live action Aladdin, Disney has created some rppled by darkening the skins of white actors so they could appear in background scenes, rather than actually casting people who already HAVE darker skins.

The US Government shut down for three days until a deal could be struck that will keep things going for another four weeks or so. Despite controlling both Houses AND the White House, Republicans blamed Democrats for causing the issue.

On the plus side,
UK Foreign Secretary and National Embarassment Boris Johnson has been told off by just about everyone in his own party for, to paraphrase, being an annoying pain in the ass.

Guillermo Del Toro's "The Shape of Water" has achieved 13 Oscar nominations.

Miraculous Ladybug introduced the first of it's new heroes in this weeks Frnech broadcast episode as Renard Rouge debuted, and we discovered there seem to be 19 Miraculous in total; The Ladybird and the Cat (which represent yin and yang), the Butterfly, the Turtle, the Bee, the Fox and the Peacock (which may represent the five Chinese elements) and twelve others which seem to relate to the Chinese zodiac

Our long nightmare is over. Frankly, I hope they go for a more trunks like design rather than the red panties, but anything will look better than the blue wetsuit look. It just don't look right.

Goddammit, it's bad enough they've started drawing him inexplicably beefy again....

On the downside of Boris being told to shut up, it was when he was saying to give the NHS much needed funds, possibly the first sane thing he's ever said in his life, so even that small victory is somewhat hollow. :(

I'll admit I also liked his idea of a road bridge across the channel so we could just drive to France too (and an unrelated non-Boris proposal to build a similar bridge from N. Ireland to Scotland), but it comes about twenty years too late for that one. Just imagine if we'd been able to drive from Ireland to Bulgaria with no more stops other than for petrol and to change drivers. From the Celtic Sea to the Black Sea, no ferries nor flights. We might have had enough of a connection to avoid the damn Brexit in the first place. I also saw a proposal recently which was to use polders to reclaim land from La Manche itself, and turn the Island of Britain into the British Peninsula. Ah, such projects as dreams of a better world are made of.

She had a great life, happy family, awesome career, and appears to have died peacefully, and I've known this was coming for at least a year and a half. I'm still heartbroken.

There are plenty of reasons to love anime and plenty of reasons to love Western cartoons. But one thing I think anime has as a pro, is that each season gets a different opening.

I LOVE anime openings. They are like professionally-made AMV with original songs. Imo it’s definitely a con that Western shows keep the same opening, with at best minor differences in the credits, no matter how long the show is. Even the best and most kickass opening gets tiresome if it stays more or less the same for 60 episodes.

And speaking of Japanese media, anybody else likes live-action dramas? I've been watching Liar Game and Nobunaga Concerto, and it has been really interesting to see anime tropes as played by real-life actors. Somewhat uncanny valley at times, but overall charming.

Some exceptions in anime... Fushigi Yuugi kept the same op/ed for all 52 episodes. Though changing it might have hurt the show cause of the way the ending in particular was used.

I love that Japan often gives new op/eds to American shows too... like Captain Power https://youtu.be/CcMfGZPOww4

Or even new animation for the 90s X-men https://youtu.be/2rSw4Xl5qfs

On the other hand, that's not always a good thing.

The second OP of Durarararararararar*falls over coughing* was way weaker than the first.

(But going in support of your point, the only reason I even watched Soul Eater was because of the second OP...)

Netflix is holding off on Season 2 of Ladybug until Spring in the US. Am disappointed admittedly.

I was hoping Dafne Keen and Sophia Lillis would get Best Supporting Actress nominations today, but I knew it was unlikely.

James Franco not getting nominated probably has more to do with the Academy not nominating comedies than any recent accusations. I didn't think Tiffany Haddish would get nominated either.

With Get Out and The Shape of Water, the Oscars can go genre, but no nominations for Wonder Woman shows they aren't going too genre.

Mother! not getting any nominations shows you never go Full Aronofsky. That's a reference to Tropic Thunder, ICYDK.

I finished Breath of the Wild on my Switch and I'm looking for something new to play. What would you guys recommend more, Golf Story or the Battle Chef game?

Its a very different game but I'd recommend the World End With You remake when that comes out. The DS version is one of my favorite games.

Managed to nudge the Muse into action the other day.
Several thousand words in a mere week.
(Oh, for the days when it was several thousand in two days... the loss of half a decade.)
The triumph was kind of ruined by the utter lack of response, I figure that was coming after nearly a year's not updating.
(but still... all that work and not even a blip... a little acknowledgement would've been enough...)
And any further nudgings are being stalled by work placement which has thrown everything out of alignment (though not being able to get home until evening don't help.)

also working means missing my weekly comic run and I know that the ones I'm after won't be there at the weekend and I'll never find them.
Disruption. Hate it.

Aladdin is weird in itself. For starters, we don't know where it's from: It's not a part of most of the arabic manuscripts of the 1001 nights (neither are the Sinbad stories) but was added when one of the (french, IIRC) orientalists translated it. It's *probably* from the Syria/Palestine region, but it's also possible he just made it up.

Also, it's technically set in China. (no adaptation has ever done that as far as I know :p Though to be fair apart from the fact that it says "This is set in China" you wouldn't notice...)

Adaptations of these kinds of things are also pretty interesting because they cut across a lot of notions of race and ethnicity in complicated ways. (both in that the middle-east has had it's own racial categories, and because of the nebulous nature of the setting) (The Levant? Iraq? The arabian peninsula? Greater Iran? India? China?)

The Hallmark mini series version of Arabian Nights did their adaption as Chinese. They also include the genie of the ring as well as the genie of the lamp. As brief as it is keeps most of the major details of the actual tales. .

Friday morning as I was crossing the street, a car came out of "nowhere" and smacked into my tote bag; making my lunch explode. No harm other than dipping sauce over everything, but the car didn't stop.

Over at my blog, I review another volume of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood: http://www.skjam.com/2018/01/21/manga-review-jojos-bizarre-adventure-part-1-phantom-blood-volume-02/

The latest Shonen Jump starter is "Act-age", which is about a young woman aspiring to be an actress. She is perhaps a little too good at method acting for her sanity.

This is a link for a mega crossover I wrote called Potluck. It’s basically between nine movies and tv shows and was a lot of fun to write. Reviews would be great. If you’re not interested, that’s fine as well. Just thought the off-topic post would be a good place to advertise.

Finally got around to seeing the new Star Wars this weekend. Didn't love it and didn't hate it. I know; high praise. Actually probably enjoyed it more because I kept hearing about how bad it was and was pleasantly surprised.

I watched the new Ladybug, and am so stoked for the rest of the season! Love the few alterations they made to the new fox costume. Rena Rouge looks much better than Vulpina. Also really excited for Chloe's eventual transformation and the journey her character will take. I don't know why, but I've always had a soft-spot for her type. I'm also a big fan of characters like Patsy Stone, Jenna Maroney, and Karen Walker.

I bought a 1st class cabin on the Titanic's return voyage (that she would have made if she had made it to NYC). Let me explain: There has been a crowd-funded video game, Titanic: Honor and Glory, being developed by a dedicated team of Titanic fanatics since 2015, and it is so gorgeous and historically-accurate and hopefully set to be released this year. Every single room will be accurately-rendered and accessible in both voyage and sinking modes. I donated $50 to its development, so my name (as well as my husband and dog) will be on the passenger list for the return voyage in the purser's office for all digital eternity. I HIGHLY recommend that you check out the trailer!

Also started and finished the first season of The Good Place. Really impressed with the twist. I'm now in the middle of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
