I don't know, dude. Kissing up to his perceived intellectual inferiors and playing department politics seems like exactly the part of academia Doom would be awful at.

Long-term, yeah.

Short-term " I have to do this, I have to get the thing "?

He could probably manage that, though not without some visible twitching.

Doom kissing up his inferiors would be the same as him complimenting that fool Richards. No way. Never.

I was surprised by Doom kissing up, too.

"DOOM does not kowtow to these intellectual inferiors!"

Doom being ABLE to be charming to achieve an end I can see, provided it's acknowledged that it's completely false and done only to achieve that end. Anything beyond that and yes, the default arrogance and condescension would kick in.

He's an ultra-brilliant scientist but, unlike Reed, he's also a skilled politician and a genius at psychology and social sciences. Doom knows how people work and think, he might not care about people, but he does know the mechanics of manipulation and that includes the occasional charm offensive.

Plus he HAS had to fight for what he got, and brainpower alone wouldn't be enough for that at the time when he had no reputation or outlet to prove his brilliance.

I remember Susan Richards making a similar point when the FF were helping Doom overthrow King Zorba's unexpectedly totalitarian reign—she acknowledged that Doom was much more charismatic than Reed, and they needed to be on their guard when following his lead in battle.

See, my reading of Doom (which, yes, is cobbled together from a bunch of not really entirely consistent portrayals, and certainly not the only one that can be reached) is that he's charismatic, but almost pathologically unable to accept a subordinate position- so as a deceptively charming leader, sure, but working within a system, not so much.

Admittedly, the above scene is before he blows himself up, runs off to the Himalayas and smashes a red hot steel mask against his face, so maybe all those character traits haven't quite set in yet.

That's what I figured. Doom isn't quite Doom yet. Just a very driven young man with a pile of issues and a massive chip on his shoulder.

Reed, Ben and Victor were at college in 1998.

I was at university in 1998.

I'm now the same age as Reed, Ben and Victor.

Shortly, they'll be younger than me.

It's finally happened.
