Book Two, "This Vicious Cabaret," opens with a song by that title, with lyrics by Moore and musical score by David J of Bauhaus. Here's David J's recording of it, issued as a 12" single in 1984:

Now on to scans from Issue 4 of the DC run (Dec. 1988), originally published in B&W in Warrior #13-#15 (Sept.-Nov. 1983). 6 pages of 24.

It's January 1998. Evey, slow dancing with V, shyly brings up the fact that he's never made any romantic or sexual overtures to her. ("Not that I want you to.") Evey says she'd understand if perhaps he had someone else, or perhaps wasn't into women...

"...Or perhaps I'm your father?" V says, shocking her because she'd been wondering exactly that. Instead of answering her question ("V, are you?") he tells her he has a surprise for her, then blindfolds her.

Rosemary Almond attends her husband Derek's funeral with decidedly mixed feelings given his abuse of her. (Meanwhile, the now-homeless Evey struggles to get by.) Roger Dascombe, head of the Mouth (broadcasting) and Derek's enemy, makes the first of several unsubtle overtures to Rosemary which, despite her loneliness and sudden financial need, she declines. At first.

The following month, V forces his way into Jordan Tower, headquarters of NTV, Norsefire's replacement for the BBC. Revealing the explosives he's wearing, he makes Dascombe broadcast a videotaped message.

9.3 of 28 pages from Issue 5 (Winter 1988), originally published in B&W in Warrior #16, 18, 19 and 22 (Dec. 1983 through Sept. 1984).

Some days later, Eric Finch, alone on a beach, reflects on his first meeting with Peter Creedy, Almond's replacement as head of the Finger, minutes after the NTV incident.

"Why did I hit him?"

To Finch's surprise, instead of punishing him the Leader sends him on holiday to Norfolk, where he is now, leaving the Nose in Dominic's capable hands. He reflects some more on his relationship with Delia and the secrets she kept from him about Larkhill.

Meanwhile, Evey finds shelter with Gordon, a bootlegging gangster-with-a-heart-of-gold who discovers her rummaging through his trash. A few weeks later, he takes her to the Kitty-Kat Keller, a sleazy music hall which both crooks and Fingermen frequent. Evey watches Creedy talking with Gordon's has-been mobster friend Robert.

Alistair Harper, a heartless gangster newly arrived from Scotland, comes over to Evey's and Gordon's table.

"You're sorry!" cries Robert. "I'm sorry! Everybody's sorry! We shouldn't have to live like this!"

As club-wielding Fingermen set upon Robert, Gordon takes Evey outside, where she throws up. And yes, that's V up above, watching.

In April, Gordon shyly invites Evey to share his bed and she spends two months in domestic bliss with him. Then Harper chases Gordon home and murders him so he can take over his booze racket.

Here ends DC's Issue 5, strangely in the middle of a chapter. But I guess it's as good a point as any.

*pokes gently at the post to make sure it's not going to disappear in the middle of commenting like the other one* >_>

When V is talking in front of the pictures of autocrats, I wonder who that is hidden by the speech balloon. I assume they're somewhat contemporary to the other 3, but can't think who it might be.

The image I'm curious is about is the one accompanying V's comment about spousal abuse. Some Roman-looking guy...? From a painting, by the looks of it. I've always wondered what that one was.
