In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

The Republic of Ireland has announced a referendum in May to review it's current almost complete ban on abortions.

POTUS 45 and Piers Morgan had a major television interview on the UK's ITV channel this weekend (though viewing figures were lower than for the regular news slot on the BBC at the same time). Morgan probably viewed this as his chance to make a Frost/Nixon style mark on history, but was so sycophantic in tone that it was compared to, amongst other things "slug foreplay" and Sue Perkins memorably tweeted a comment you'd probably be better reading for yourself.

A leaked document suggests that the UK will suffer economically for Brexit no matter what exit strategy is used. In other news, the Pope is Catholic.

The CIA has stated that they believe China is as big a threat to the US as Russia in terms of interfering in the democratic process.

In some parts of the UK, waiting lists for NHS consultation over gender reassignment are currently over 2 years, when the promise is 18 weeks.

Sort of on topic, the second Ikemen figure (Nightwing being the first, of course) is been set for release, the Red Hood. Alas the initial run's "extra piece" is NOT what you might be imagining, but is an alternate face piece instead.

In video game news, a 35 year old record for an Atari 2600 video game completion has been thrown out, after it was decided it must have been faked since, it is claimed, the game literally cannot be completed in that short a time.

Star Trek Discovery continues to impress, and First Officer/Acting Captain Saru gets one hell of a Star Trek speech in the most recent episode. Give that being a command of his own! (no spoilers in the discussion please)

Saw the first Black Lightning episode (the UK being a week behind the US in terms of release schedules) and good heavens Cress Williams is both awesomely impressive in the role (The man has charisma in places most people don't even have places), AND ridiculously levels of sexy as well. I'll... be in my bunk! :)

Still in training, but getting closer to actual job duties.

Binged Devilman Crybaby--Yeah, that's a hard R rating and an excellent job of updating the setting.

I really liked Crybaby (in the way that it's actually possible to like Devilman)... The art style was great - the fact that it was often quite flexible with adherence to the models really added to things. (Deliberate off-model tends to bother me when it's not for humourous effect - going chibi, or over-rendering in a normally cartoony work - and often when it is (if I see one more exaggeratedly foreshortened face in anime, I may scream)...but it works for me, here.) Could have better explained a particular not-really-character's actions, but...

There's reason to be skeptical of this latest claim regarding the Voynich Manuscript. First, the supposed "opening sentence" (never mind that the manuscript lacks any obvious punctuation), "She made recommendations to the priest, man of the house and me and people," is a mess ("man of the house and me and people"? Really?).

Second, the researchers arrived at even this dubious rendering by "making a couple of spelling corrections." In other words, tweaking the original manually--not with computer analysis--until it produced something vaguely resembling a coherent statement. The originators of the Bible Code nonsense did essentially the same thing: moving the goalposts until they came up with results that matched their hypothesis.

I think the most plausible explanation yet regarding the Voynich Manuscript is that which Gerry Kennedy and Rob Churchill propose, with reservations, in their 2004 book (titled, appropriately, The Voynich Manuscript). Noting that the work has proven indecipherable, by human or machine, without considerable fudging, they suggest it's not a cypher at all, but rather an unusually lengthy case of written glossolalia, its meaning--if it has any--knowable only to the author and not communicable to anyone else. If true, this explanation would make the manuscript an example of outsider art, specifically the sort of outsider art created by someone with a mental illness.

Just saw Call Me by Your Name in theaters and was very impressed. It's about the love affair between the son of an archaeology professor and the graduate student that stays with them in the Italian countryside during the summer of 1983. Gorgeous cinematography and stellar performances. The chemistry between Armie Hammer (Oliver) and ‎Timothée Chalamet (Elio) is palpable and authentic. They both look like statues from antiquity at times. Also love the soundtrack, in particular Une barque sur l’ocean from Miroirs by Andre Laplante. I doubt that it will win Best Picture for the unfortunate fact that I cannot imagine the Academy awarding it to an LGBT picture 2 years in a row (after last year's Moonlight). I understand that some audience members and critics took issue with the age difference (31-year-old Hammer plays 24-year-old Oliver, and 22-year-old Chalamet plays 17-year-old Elio), but your mileage may vary. I know that James Woods of all people took great issue with this.

I wasn't too interested in many of the Best Picture noms last year, but this year there are actually a lot that don't seem overly-Oscar-baity to me, primarily The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro, Lady Bird, and Get Out.

Also just finished the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel about a 1950s housewife who tries her hand at stand-up comedy after her husband leaves her. Wonderful supporting cast includes Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein. It's on Amazon Prime. Highly recommend.

Also, I've been watching the French versions of the newest Ladybug episodes and am dying. I am so curious about how they're going to pull off a Chloe-redemption arc this season. It also seems like they are gradually escalating Hawkmoth's attempts at getting hold of the miraculouses. I feel like Dark Owl has come the closest. I almost screamed towards the end of the episode.

Oooh! I didn't think of the Emma Frost comparison, but it so fits. I can't wait for some icy heroics. I also think that we're probably going to get some more info about why Chloe is the way she is most likely connected to her mother who we saw a glimpse of in Despair Bear. Adrien, who has been friends with her since they were toddlers, seems genuinely shocked by how mean-spirited she became in the interim in the origins 2-parter.

And you're right. That level of trust between the 2 of them is so authentic and well built-up-to. I also liked the first on-screen interaction between Tiki and Plagg where they adorably share a macaroon. I wonder how long it's been since they had seen each other.

I feel like Hawkmoth becoming more erratic and desperate is going to lead-up to a more formidable big-bad (possibly in the form of Adrien's mother?).

I may have seen a still of Nathalie being confronted with the Peacock Kwami, but don't know if it's real. I know that it's been shown to be in Hawkmoth's possession next to a photo of Adrien's mom.

What gets me is how little character development some of these potential future miraculous-holders have been given so far. Besides a few episodes in season 1, we haven't had much focus on Nino, not to the extent of Alya. At least with Alya and Chloe, we've gotten to know them both pretty well. But we know virtually nothing about Nathalie. But from the looks of all those other Miraculi in Master Fu's box, it seems that the entire class is going to be miraculous-holders at some point.

Ooh! I've veen waiting for one of them to get akumatized (sp?).
I must have missed where Nathalie indicates that she knows.

However, Alya is new to the school starting in the origins episode, hence why she was not putting up with Chloe's shit because she didn't have 6+ years of abuse being conditioned and normalized. Also Chloe refers to her as "the new girl."

I really wish all those "practice!!!" advices at least acknowledged that some people are objectively more, or less, predisposed than others to do certain things.

Yes, if you practice and keep practicing, then eventually you will get at least moderately good at [Thing]. It is, technically, just a matter of time and effort.

But the patronizing way it's said, "you just have to practice that's all there is to it!," completely ignores natural talent (or lack thereof). Some people get the hang of something at first try, others need a thousand tries. Some people feel at ease like a fish in water when they do the thing, others have to force themselves through it and push hard for every step.

A person who is running on foot and a person who is driving a car are, technically, both able to cover the same distance. Why, it's just a matter of time and effort!

EDIT: btw, this isn’t me saying that talented people have it easy. Struggles are struggles. Jascha Heifetz, a famous and extremely talented violinist, once said: “if I don’t practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.” So clearly even the best do need to work their asses off. I just wish there were a general acknowledgement that natural inclination is a thing, rather than the laser-focus on practice as a universal panacea.

Still working on my TV show backlog. Finally started the second season of Shut Eye. I'm really amazed the lead actor doesn't get more work. Then again, between being a con man on this an a spy on Burn Notice, he's probably played more roles than most get to.

Joanne Whalley is playing Sister Maggie in season 3 of "Daredevil."

In the comics, Sister Maggie is Matt Murdock's mother. Of course, the MCU doesn't mind changing character backgrounds compared to the comics. On the show, she could be Foggy's mother for all I know.

Here's Mark Waid explaining why Maggie left Jack and Matt.

Given Foggy's mentioned his mom several times, usually in the context of her wanting him to get a job as a butcher rather than wasting his time with that law school nonsense...
That's probably unlikely.

This is probably a stupid question, but to anyone who cares to read: how exactly can you tell what your sexual orientation is? What does sexual and/or romantic attraction feel like?

I know I'm not asexual since I am addicted to watch porn and read erotica, but I get off more on listening to/watching/reading about the people involved enjoying themselves and being happy than just seeing people's bodies or anything.

that sounds pretty healthy to me. that's pretty much how i approach porn.
as far as sexual attraction goes, I can only speak to my own experience which is that there are people that are physically stimulating.
lissa_quon: (Default)
From: [personal profile] lissa_quon
Well the question is - are you attracted to anyone? Ever? That's a question you've probably answered yourself if the concept of asexuality is on the table. I'd suggest looking up http://www.asexuality.org/ - for more specfication.

You can be ace and enjoy porn. I know a couple of ace folks that do. For different reasons. One watched cause hentai is funny. One watched amateur porn cause she found the bits of real couples interacting during the not sex parts adorable. I am ace and I sometimes like to read the bit about foreplay and build up but skim the actual act. And watching it I find hilarious. It looks ridiculous. Animated or real life. Just everything jiggles and squishes and wtf.

Asexuality is usually defined by lack of sexual attraction to people. Not lack of sex drive. That is a common misconception. Not all asexuals are anti sex, not all asexuals are aromantic. Like everything there is a wide spectrum. Once again - the asexuality website and wiki is very helpful.

As for - the differences between romantic and sexual attraction. Hoo boy....I've rarely if ever experienced sexual attraction so I can't explain it. I like aesthetics (I'm an artist) - I like looking at attractive people but I don't really want to bang them.

I spent a large chunk of my life being baffled by media where the plot hinges on folks NOT banging and being baffled why this was so hard. Just don't take it out of your pants dude - I am not seeing a problem. I'm guessing people with sex drives SEE the problem.

I have had romantic crushes - I just - its a crush. I like the person - they are cute, charming, whatever the reason. I want them to like me and notice me. (I have a rather sad history of doing stupid things for pretty blonde people and then taking too long to realize I'm doing it.)

Sorry for the ramble - I'm not sure if I was any help. But like I said - asexuality site and wiki has more info that might help.

I don't know, I don't think the actual sex looks hilarious or as bad as you do - most of the time, I'm turned on by that (though I tend to avoid stuff that looks both impractical and uncomfortable; I'm much more into something slow, romantic and vanilla than the kind of senseless jackhammering that often pops up, which does look gross and awkward to me). I'm not really aroused by the body, though, so much as the idea that the person/people in whatever I'm reading/watching/listening to are aroused by whoever/whatever and into what they're doing because they like that/each other*. Am I just being confusing, and making something over nothing?

(Teal Deer is meme talk for tl:dr - too long didn't read - I figured my ramble was probably a bit unweildly)

You're not being confusing. This is just a complicated topic. In the end - you do you. These are probably things you have to sort out yourself.

I don't speak for all people on the Ace spectrum - I can only vouch for me. So my opinions of porn are not really a great indicator of anything other than my maturity levels.

But like I said- ones views on porn are not a good indicator of much. To get down to brass tacks, its all about your attraction/ arousal/ desire for people in meat space. Do you want to do anything physical with people?

(If I am incorrect or talking out of my ass - someone feel free to jump in. I can only speak from my personal knowledge which - is not really a good yard stick)

If something happens (whether that’s a love or something more casual) then that happens, but I’m not one to actively seek sex, love and/or romance. I’ve felt arousal and desire before (namely during late puberty), but not necessarily to/for anyone or anything specifically, of any particular gender. I’ve yet to experience a romantic connection with anyone (whether that be true love or a simple crush) either, but I’m still relatively young so I’m sure that’s prone to changing (just maybe not anytime soon).
