As the guy who created DC’s Triumph, the ultimate retcon, I can only say again that a good magician never performs the same trick twice. No theory I’ve seen online yet has nailed what’s happening. -- Mark Waid

is this where the whole, Magic has a price thing comes into play. Wanda's connection to Vision allowed her magic to over throw the spell, but it's a spell that can't be over thrown, just passed on (or her hex magic did it) and since she also shares a connection to Pietro it transferred over to him.

Either that, or the Grandmaster’s game only allows for a fixed number of native defenders? So you can swap out one hero for another tag-team style but not add any extras? That was my thought.

I love the callback to something introduced in Avengers #19 or whatever... I wonder which writer thought to bring back the emergency headquarters after it was so thoroughly forgotten. :)

Yeah, if teams aren't of equal numbers that would be cheating and cause a forfeit. Can't have that.

It's not unheard of for hockey to have uneven teams on the ice while one side has more in the penalty box, but hockey might be a little too violent for planet-wrecking despots.

Al Ewing.
Definitely Al Ewing.
He knows all.

(I mean, maybe Mark Waid at an outside stretch...)

Remember when Cannonball was an immortal? What happened with that?

It gets brought up now and then.
(Not that often, but sometimes. Every few years or so.)

Yeah, the whole "Sam is an External" thing got retconned away, then retconned back in. So he still is, but no one really wants to use any of the Externals besides Pooky, Selene, and Sam, so that whole is ignored.

They obviously want us to think that the Grandmaster's opponent is Kang. But given how obvious that is, and that Kang is being used over in the Guardians of the Galaxy/space event (not that being in two places should stop someone who's not only a time traveler, but has spawned multiple alternate versions of himself), it's got to be someone else.

From the art I'm wondering if it could be Apocalypse? I don't know though, boasting about making the Grandmaster cease to exist might not be his style.

It's kind of hard to feel sorry for Pietro here.
Okay, yes, he has decades of characterisation of not being a total ****, but...
Here, he's written as a tantrum-throwing egotistical jackass who is still, decades later, treating Wanda like she's an inexperienced child, and then starts being an even bigger ass when she, like anyone else in that situation would, says "just do your job for once."
Yeah, Pietro. Her sins. Like rewriting the world so mutants were in charge which led to her wiping out nearly all mutants.
OH WAIT, that was YOUR idea!

So it's hard, within the confines of the story, to feel much sympathy as he gets the pus beaten out of him.

That, and the coffee usually doesn't make itself in most planes of existence.

Well, it's not like the head of the mad super-science organization could make a machine that makes her own coffee.
(That'd normally be her girlfriend's job, but Aikku's all frozen at the moment.)

I find Simon's pacifism to be, well, moronic when you look at the universe he lives in. When you have the likes of Kang, Ahnihilus (I know I'm butchering his name), Thanos etc. ready to devastate whole world his whole "I won't hurt anybody" attitude just means his friends have to work harder to pick up his slack.

When did this pacifism thing begin? It really sounds dumb. Certainly for this particular line of work. You wanna be in super rescue? Great. Maybe join Damage Control or something. Check with Pepper Potts, she's got some experience on that one. I get how that could be an interesting story-telling beat...but Wonder Man isn't usually famous for being that. :)

It started some time during Bendis' run, he lamented all the violence he had been involved in during his tenure with The Avengers. He was part of a group called The Revengers that attacked The Avengers.

I do get some of Simon's issues with the team, though, when he said the team sometimes seemed to do more harm than good (i.e. Ultron), but I never saw Simon really come up with an alternative. Super hero registration wasn't the answer, Osborn being in charge of HAMMER wasn't the answer, and his joining The Avengers again and saying that he's going to be as useful as Solomon Grundy on the Legion of Doom team during the seventies when he wasn't allowed to punch people (I am not making that up. ) isn't the answer either.

I'm wondering... Ewing recently introduced the idea that the new Marvel Universe's past is fluid and changing all the time, being influenced by future events reaching back, specific dates of a lot of things (like the Silver Age) being pulled forward to keep the events somewhat recent. What if Voyager isn't a retcon in the sense that it's a trick or sham, but more like DC's reboots where team origins and rosters get reshuffled now and then? As of now she actually was one of the founding members of the Avengers, and will continue to have been so unless someone goes back and changes it?
