Random fan: Marvel comics are too needlessly dark and depressing these days!

FWIW, he never intended it to be depressing. He wrote it as a comedy, and I dunno, to me it quite obviously reads that way.

In the least surprising anecdote ever, Ellis said that back when it was first published, he got a phone call and it was Garth Ennis on the other end laughing his ass off because he was reading the Ghost Rider page and found it so funny he had to tell him.

Yeah, parts of it are absolutely hilarious (in a very Ennis-ian way, too!) but a lot of it falls flat for me. Ellis has done a lot better elsewhere.

Since Sheldon already has an eyepatch, Fury should have upped his game with *two* eyepatches. Now that would have funny.

Honestly, I'm in general all for weirdly depressing AU's.

This one though? It's just... Pointlessly thrown together. More importantly it doesen't really say anything about either the world or the Marvel Universe, or Marvel as a franchise. It's just weirdly distasteful randomness.

Warren Ellis was in a really, -really- dark mood the week he wrote this one...

Ah yes, Warren Eliis' "Everything sucks and has cancer." Not one of the better comics he's written.

"Corps of Supreme Being?" But there's only one of them...I'll see myself out.

Gotta say, Galactus being dead might balance out all the crappiness we see on Earth-Ruins. Shame about all those heroes, but a thousand uneaten planets could be worth a Captain America....

In fact, the Marvel multiverse is an interesting choice for this story, because so much horrible shit goes down in 616 and the better-known alternates. Is the Ruins universe actually worse, overall? Or is it just worse for Sheldon?

I would have enjoyed it more with a bit more internal plausibility. For example, I think President Xavier would have more subtle means of making things go his way than Cruise Missiles.

"I feel compelled to point out that RUINS was a comedy."
-Warren Ellis

The fact that you had to mention that probably indicates how it wasn't written well enough for people to get that. No Planetary, this. If it was meant as a Parody of Marvels, that was poorly communicated (and in fact, the format it was published in made readers assume it was a companion piece or at least of a kind). It wasn't silly or biting enough to feel like a direct satire, just ludicrous and dark.

Honestly, the atrocious artwork was probably the worst part. It doesn't flow and its hard to even identify what's happening. Just because it was painted doesn't make it actually GOOD. Stylish? Sure. Effective panel art? Not so much.

I want to know more about the random soldier apparently worthy to lift Mjolnir. ;)
