"Carter Hall, perhaps the greatest detective in history".... Really? Ummm... well, I suppose it's a thing, but how many times are they going to reboot his origin/mission/purpose before someone finally decides (and this may be sacrilege to some, so sorry to his fanbase in advance) that Hawkman just isn't that interesting a character and isn't really meant to be an A-lister.

Hawkman is one of those characters that has a perceived status derived almost entirely from being one of the first comic book characters and an original member of the JSA and...well, really for no other reason. He was a backup/shared character for about 10 years. Then he reappeared in the sixties for about four years and then failed. Then he became a backup character only showing up in JLA or backups until the 80s. Then back to supporting character until the 90s. Repeat in the 00s and 10s.

They keep trying to make him happen but...he's JUST NEVER BEEN THAT POPULAR.

People like to joke about Aquaman, but he's had some pretty long runs and he's on his eighth series. He has name recognition that Hawkman has never had and never will.

So thinking about what wizardru just wrote, and while I like the idea of Hawkman, it's true, he just isn't that interesting. Has he ever had an iconic moment where he did something that gets mentioned whenever the character is shown?

The Barry Allen Flash, as an example, was dull as dirt, in my opinion (some may say he still is), but he had his moment where he took out the Anti-Monitor's cannon and went out a hero. (until they brought him back but hey at least it took a few years before they did it)

So what is considered Hawkman's moment?

The mini Hawkworld, which was popular enough at the time that it can be considered partially responsible for the Hawksnarl.

Wait, I know this one. It's...
Um...
It's...
Er...
Well then.

I got nothin'. Hawkman has been around since the '40s, but his primary characteristic is "guy with wings and mace" and depending on who you ask maybe either "reincarnated Egyptian dude" or "alien space cop." His other defining characteristic is "backstory and concept so fucked up, DC has been trying to fix him for decades."

The closest he came to a good, character-defining, series was when Robinson and Johns rebooted him in JSA and gave him his own series in 2002. Even so, how many Hawkman villains can anyone name? Maybe, if you're well-read and fond of obscure characters, you can think of the Manhawks and Byth. Or Hath-Set.

Hawkgirl has a much higher profile thanks to the Justice League cartoons, and in those, Hawkman was always more of an awkward afterthought.

At least Barry Allen generated a whole gallery of rogues who were interesting, memorable, and versatile. He might have been dull in his own right, but he left behind a legacy of useful villains. The best you can say for Hawkman is he inspired Thanagar, an entire planet of hawk-winged people (who tend to be jerks, invaders, and/or antagonists).

Poor guy.

Uhm, GENTLEMAN GHOST you plebs!?

I mean, all those villains were still around and fighting a much more interesting hero. Hawkman at least isn't taking anything away from anybody.

That time he beat up a bunch of Nazis at a picnic was pretty satisfying.

And, uh...
That's about it?

Hell, Wesley Dodds and Charles McNider were better detectives on his own team.

Isn't it canon that Sherlock Holmes was a real person in DCU history, too?

Everything about this is so wildly non-sensical to me mostly because so much imagery is related to Batman.... like, why????? Other than popularity, what about him suggests all this otherworldly dimensional connections. Just seems goofy.

Is this story any good? (To those who are reading it in full)

Barbatos selected him as the template, maybe even molded him from the beginning, to be the gateway for this invasion.

Not following this the way I should be, and the cover looks like... eh, but the interior art seems pretty good and I'm really digging the focus on Diana and Kendra. Though for like .073 seconds I thought Kendra was New52!Raven's costume and got momentarily confused. I got better tho.

Anybody thinks this Diana feels kinda off? Too no-nonsense and battle happy. It seems to me like a lot of Wondy writers really just want to be writing Big Barda.

Unfortunately for all of us, "a lot of Wondy writers" happens to include Bruce Timm and company, so that kind of characterization will probably be kicking around for a good while yet.

To be fair, she, and everyone else, are having to deal with evil versions of themselves. That are led by a Joker-ized Batman. "Talking" isn't exactly on the table for ANY of them.
