Hey, money's been tight for me lately, I'll pick up this series when I can.

And I mean, look, Chris Claremont had some fetishy stuff in his comics too, but at least it usually had a point or some context in the story, He didn't go "here's the Justice League and Doom Patrol all inflated into balls for a panel, for reasons!"

I mean when he did a three panel spread of Kitty Pryde fattening up to an immobile blob, at least there was a grounded reason for it: The Alien Baby did it!

...I am not helping my case am I? *Sigh* Welp, time to go delete my browser history.

Even Flex looks embarrassed to bring it up. And look at the actual two-page spread. Eeeveryone seems to be thinking "What have I become?".

I don't know, judging by the look on Lobo's face in the close up panel he's digging it.

Lobo:....Oh come on, we all know I've done kinkier shit than this on a Saturday night. Who are we trying to fool here?

I feel like I need to make a retraction here.

In the post preceding this one, I said that at least when Chris Claremont put fetishy crap in his comics, it had a point.

I just read the Inferno Tie in for Excalibur on Marvel Unlimited, and I have to admit I was wrong.

I was WROOOOONG.

In the opening of this two parter, Rachel Grey senses the shit going down in New York, and blasts off literally through the Excalibur HQ, when the rest of the team go to get Kitty, they find that she's dressed like a literal baby, with a bib a bonnet, a diaper and a pacifier. Apparently because Rachel did it by accident when she was blasting off (I think she was worried about her little brother or something).

But yeah no, clearly I overestimated Chris subtlety with the weird kink stuff. My bad.

Mmm! Much to learn have you, young Padawan.

This isn't even getting into the bit where he has Emma turn Rachel into a baby after dressing her up as one...or, unrelated, his many instances of women with tentacle arms...

There was also this arc in a comic from around this era (I don't even know if Claremont wrote it) where Rachel and the team go to the Savage Land and fight dinosaur people, one of the Dinosaur people has psychic powers, and uses it to Hypnotize Rachel to think she's a Dinosaur person herself, and she she joins them, and spends the entire rest of the story slowly turning into a Dinosaur woman herself (The Dinosaur people explain that she is telekinetically reshaping her own DNA, and that seeing herself turning into a Dinosaur is reinforcing the mind control, which is causing her to change faster, so by the end when her mind gets restored to normal she's a dinosaur, and she has to change back.

Not unlike that time the Shadow King possessed Karma in "New Mutants", fattening her up into a giant blob, only for her to then later get trapped on Asgard and slim down in order to look after a small child she'd imagined.

...CLAREMONT!

Yeah, its kind of weird that Farouk never did that to anyone else he ever possessed (Although to be fair I don't think he ever possessed anyone long enough to do that to them ever again, but then again in later incarnations Shadow King became this sort of psychic entity of evil rather than just the ghost of a gluttonous crime boss. Of course you can still see a bit of it in the Legion TV show where Farok's natural form is this creepy fat Steve Bannon looking mother fucker)

...Based on their interpretation of how fat distributes around the face and neck, I'd say Claremont and Sienkiewicz's "New Mutants" run was definitely an influence...

Manga Khan was negotiating with Retconn (the villains from Doom Patrol) to buy Prime Earth on behalf of Mr Nebula. To make it appealing for purchase, Retconn had homogenized the world, using magical milk, delivered by their Superman knockoff, Milkman Man, and mass media, especially a show featuring Rita Farr, who was both celebrity and a Jesus figure. (Among other things, but those are the ones relevant to these scans.)

The Justice League of America, Wonder Woman, and the Young Animal characters fought to undo the homegenization. Which they almost did, and they certainly prevented the sale, but Retconn's exit strategy was 'destroy it all'. This also released Rita from where they were holding her, and seems to have given her some insight into the structure of the multiverse and what lays beyond. The destruction was undone by...the whole 'inflation' thing. Which is absurd even by the standards set by the rest of the crossover, and the pre-crossover part of Doom Patrol.

End result, Prime Earth is saved, restored to more or less the state it was before Retconn started doing their thing, Rita is returned to life, presumably with some sort of cosmic perception, and Eternity Girl (the character who shows up for exactly one panel in these scans*) has snuck into reality, and Robotman is human again (those last two bits are not shown in the scans, but might as well include them).

* The weakest part of the crossover, really. It's a weird meta-thing that seems oddly unselfaware, given the context, and seems to mostly be a redo of Gaiman's take on Element Girl, from that one issue of Sandman (she has a more complicated history, but her powers, appearance, and personality match up fairly well). BUT, her own series that spun out of it is actually pretty good, so far.

So...what about the page here with the coffee stain on the map. What does that signify? The multiverse being undone? The creation of Young Animal? Rita Farr going 'oh god I can see forever'?

In universe, it'd be the last one, but meta-wise obviously a play on the quote that's quoted on the post, so it'd be the second.
