Doctor Hormone, Flying Ace

Master of understatement, that premier

Doctor Hormone, he of upstanding medical ethics, has chemically transformed boys into an army of full-grown Novoslavian men. But will that be enough to withstand the Soviet Eurasian "Urasian" invasion, and the waning patience of Novoslavia's top general?

From Popular Comics #55 (Sept 1940). This comic is in the public domain (scans courtesy of ComicBookPlus.com).

Premier Smartenoff is a rather forgiving sort, isn't he? General Battlesky just tried to execute him, his top scientist and a little girl. But instead of facing a court martial and a life sentence (if he were lucky), Battlesky gets to present Hormone with a medal. Go figure.

Watch for the next installment, in which Novoslavia gets some unexpected zoological help.

"Well its not as bad as some of the swing bands back home."

"Sweetie people are dying by the hundreds of thousands, shut the fuck up."

Seriously, that's up there with Wakka going "BOOM! Like Happy festival fireworks!" at the destruction of the Al Bhed capital. Actually its even worse because at least Wakka was trying to cheer one of the survivors up (Albeit in the dumbest way possible). This kid is just being a little shit.

There's really something to be said for the very early Golden Age like this, where no one's figured out what the rules of the genre are, because we're literally writing it as we go.

Oh yes. A lot of 'em still ended up fairly basic and dull, but you ended up with some real swing-for-the-fences titles like this!
