The strange march of characterisation and time.
It's weird to see John showing a sense of humour (if, admittedly, a dickish one), after most modern comics have him as the grim, stoic, stoic-y one who's stoicly stoic.

Though as far as origin stories go... "I don't want the job because I was EATING BREAKFAST" is not exactly up there with "doomed planet", "dead parents" or "dying alien".
What was stopping the Guardians from just choosing someone else? Several billion humans, surely there'd have been someone with sufficient willpower around who would be totally up for it.
(Not to mention the other GLs come across as a bunch of arseholes. Yeah, pressure the guy into taking the job by insulting him and comparing him to Hal "chicken-wuss" Jordan. Good job, team.
... makes you wonder if the Guardians had them in there for precisely that reason, actually.
"So, what if the earthman refuses?"
"We have some of the other Lanterns taunt and insult him into taking the job."
"A plan with no drawbacks! Go us!")

Also, some architect, he hasn't even put in a handrail. What if the waiter had tripped or slipped? What the hell, Stewart?

The reason they gave for picking John was his experience, though that does seem like a sunk cost fallacy.

John's complete reversal isn't quite as plot-driven as the way you get mid-trilogy Marty McFly to do almost anything by calling him "chicken," but it's pretty close, even if it is couched as a stand against prejudice.

I also have to wonder about his flirting technique. He seems to think everything is going according to plan with Tawny, and I'm sure he's seen a few slap-slap-kiss romances (he knows his Bogey, after all). But, uh, you know she's got to file a story based on this interview, right? It doesn't look like it's going to be a flattering one.

Slap-slap-kiss must be John's thing. We just saw him meet his future wife, and that consisted of her calling him an asshole and him questioning her gender.

I kind of like this depiction of John. He's a dick, but in an entertaining way, like Guy (rather than a dull way, like Hal so often is). Obviously, some of this cockiness is because he's still a novice, and something he'll grow out of post one dead planet - but I wouldn't mind seeing some of this trollishness return.

I don't really like these Len Wein issues, but it led to one of the finest runs of Green Lantern, the Steve Englehart issues at the time of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. (Up until the GREEN LANTERN CORPS issues, when it went totally askew.) And it is amusing, in light of later events, that Katma Tui was the catalyst to making John a GL permanently.

So, is this better or worse than "Hal met John and Guy before they became Green Lanterns" retcons. The "Hal met Guy" was done in EMERALD DAWN II.
I *think* "Hal met John at a military bar" was done in SECRET ORIGIN, but I'm not sure.

It wasn't exactly a meeting, more that they were in the same bar brawl (on opposite sides, naturally.)
