Young Justice #1: Seven Crises

"These are the REAL versions of the characters. How? All WILL be revealed in series." - Brian Michael Bendis

harpers_child: a neighborhood watch sign where the typical icon has been replaced with a batman signal (DC: the bat is watching)

Look at my babies! Look at them! Young and happy and alive and doing friend things like punching people in the face!

Bringing back Impulse and Conner.

I take back almost every bad thing I've said about Bendis.

Basically. Who knew I was such a cheap date?

Yeah, I just saw BMB post the JLU gif of Booster Gold being mistaken for Green Lantern on Twitter.

My first thought was "you stay away from Booster"

My second was "well, you can't do any more damage than Tom King"

(Really, what is it with writers expressing affection for a character only to go on to write them as completely unrecognizable?)

My third was "hey, at least he brought Young Justice back. Maybe I can forgive him for most* of his post-Daredevil Marvel work and give him the benefit of the doubt on Booster"

*I will NEVER forgive him for Hawkeye.

For me I love that he brought back Jessica Drew, one of my favourites I hate that he retconned the shit out of her (pretty much removing the High Evolutionary's involvement, making her father a jerk, removing all the magic shenanigans, making it so she was never even a PI for any real length of time).

And then of course she was a Skurll for like two years, so I wasn't even reading about Jess.

I mean I love some of the stuff since then, but so annoyed at how she was brought back, but glad she was brought back.

Plus his Superman run, gave the the Supergirl Rebirth comic a second stab at life... So I owe him a lot as a fan, but I get so angry at him!!!

Overall though, I do enjoy his dialogue.

It irks me to see Gemworld people talking in Bendisspeak, but at least it's not the actual Young Justice kids doing it.

I dunno, Wonder Girl on the third page seems pretty Bendis-y to me.

firstly, I'm not only impressed that Bendis held an affinity for YJ, but im extra impressed that he was able to bring them back as close to their 90s incarnations as possible.

YJ is such an odd book that amassed a cult following. It essentially was a Teen Superhero book about nothing. And that became its charm.

It wasn't a huge seller during its original run. Other than "Sins of Youth", had no other crossovers (and Sins of Youth had little to no lasting effects in the DCU as a whole). It wasnt really a critical darling. I don't think its even been regarded as one of Voldemorts best works.

Yet it really maintains a very loyal following. Pretty much the 90s version of the Wolfman-Perez Titans, without the melodrama.

And even more ironic that the cartoon of the same name has pretty much the same level of acclaim and wasnt really a smash hit either.

There was one other crossover later in the book. I barely remember it, but it had some alternate reality set up and it was pretty much just YJ, Impulse, and Superboy’s books

EDIT: World Without Young Justice. YJ 44, 45 and an issue each of Robin, Impulse, and Superboy

Ha. Every once in a while I forget about the unspoken and wonder why this place is devoid of YJ scans, then I remember.

Brian Bendis tempting me to buy a DC book?

OK, what horrible, awful, fan-hating nonsense does the editor have planned?

Do the kids get sold into prostitution in a setting knocked off of American Flagg? Do they get disemboweled by the Authority? Do they travel back in time & join Richard the Lionheart on his Crusade, wherein they all die?

I want this to be good so bad. I may have to wait for the trade on this one. It's not that I distrust Bendis. I just really, really, really think DC hates us that much.

Thinking the fact they just got Bendis is probably keeping the dread hand of the Editors at bay, for the moment.

They're probably hovering around, looking hopeful.
"Couldn't you just horribly murder one of them?"
"What about mutilation? Remove an arm or something? C'mon, you don't need all of them!"
"Go away!"
"Just a tiny wound! A bit off the flesh!"

Really hoping this is his new "Ultimate Spider-Man"-styled outlet.
