Yeah that seems like a Mark Millar ending all right.

So over five issues of the good guys getting killed like chumps and then one deus ex machina and its all undone? That could work if it didn't feel so contrived. Was this all a big, risky plan to draw out the conspirators or was it just dumb?

Like, the problem I have here is that there really isn't much magical world-building. Millar is so happy with the idea, he doesn't feel like he has to explain or sell it. How does magic work in The Magic Order? It just sort does whatever the plot says, I guess, but mostly it's just blowing people's heads off, cuz that's shocking right? Why does the Magic Order live tiny little lives and still risk everything to protect mankind? I realize that the disagreement over that is the central argument (as are more of Millar's series, now that I think about...Jupiter's Legacy, Wanted and so forth all follow this pattern, surely more that I'm just not thinking about), but do they spend any real time dealing with it? Do they explain why this hasn't happened before or why they don't have safeguards against it?

I can't fault Millar for basically just producing material to get made into TV series, but I'm not going to encourage him that much, either. This isn't bad work, honestly, it just feels kind of flat, to me. The premise is better than the execution, IMHO. I don't actively dislike it, I just don't feel that intrigued or interested by it.
