The last Stardust the Superwizard story, by Fletcher Hanks.

That's the Stardust we all know. Presumably he only lets the Stardust Sixth Column fight the Fifth Column, so that's why their not in this story.

"Fletcher Hanks created 51 stories and he did all by himself before dropping out of the business. To this day nobody knows why he stopped, but his family point out that he could never hold onto any job for very long. Burnout combined with alcoholism seems a valid hypothesis. His son, Ted Hanks, believes that Fletcher Senior met up with a woman who supported him and that was that. Aside from a brief encounter in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel where Hanks asked for some money, Fletcher Hanks never saw his father after he left the home he ravaged in 1930.

“Years later I’d be driving through New York on business and be stopped at a light and look over to see these bums drinking or passed out in a doorway,” Fletcher Junior recalled in 2005, “I’d look at those drunks an wonder if one of ‘em was my dad.”

On a frigid Manhattan night in 1976, broke and probably drunk, Fletcher Hanks Senior died alone on a park bench. It was months before anyone called the folks back in Oxford."

Maybe he realized that in his last case, his creativity had slipped (he let his Sixth Column child soldiers handle some of the baddies and merely punched the rest). So he figured he'd better up the ante with a bizarre anatomical transformation and a WTF golden octopus.

God damn, criminals in the Stardust-verse are well resourced. Why do they even bother with crime?

You realize this is pretty much Goldfinger's plan, a decade or two later--using gas, knocking out everyone in Fort Knox, trying to steal the gold---the only difference is Goldwater was going to use a small nuclear device to crack open the vault and irradiate the gold? And instead of a near-omnipotent being with his own private star to stop it, instead we had a British secret agent with a license to kill named James Bond? Of course I don't think there's any chance that Ian Fleming ever read a comic by Fletcher Hanks---but it's still an interesting coincidence.

While ol' Barry Goldwater did a lot of things, I doubt he ever tried to rob Fort Knox witha nuclear device.

Oops. Right. I'd correct it, but your comment wouldn't make any sense then. My bad. Obviously I mean Goldfinger instead.

With all his powers, I'm going to conclude that Stardust actually created all these villains just for an excuse to cause chaos on Earth. He conveniently lives far away enough where the bad guy's go through with their evil plan, and he comes in to save the day. And then through his act of punishment, he goes through what I can only describe as a destruction filled torture fest on his own creations because this is what really gets him off. I mean, did he really need to wipe out that entire island's eco system? He could have just summoned that darn golden octopus!

At the very least, he seemed to hang back and let stuff happen before acting. Punishment was the point.

Oh, definitely.

I'd like it if someone did a new Stardust comic that got that
