Mike Norton brings up a good point on Twitter: "I feel like if you’re gonna make a comic about a public figure who champions a living wage, you shouldn’t owe a bunch of money to freelancers."

Dang I didn't know they had a history of this. I actually contacted them asking if it was too late to get Larry Hama on board with this to maybe do a short story as a spin-off to the Barack the Barbarian setting he did with DDP some years ago; which is the last thing I bought from DDP. They told me they did contact him, but he was too busy.

Is there any articles detailing the history of complaints against them?

I'm not aware of any articles. Mike Costa on his Twitter has a thread that elaborates a bit. https://twitter.com/MikeCosta/status/1101259537682595840

Oh okay, thanks. I was wondering if there was any actual legal action taken against them, or something like that.

It really sucks, that apparently both Hasbro brand holders in the 00's were corrupt, and stealing money from their talent, Dreamwave of course collapsed because of it.

Does the “freshman force” include Sharice Davids, who AOC campaigned against? Is the “establishment” she’s fighting against going to implicitly include such noted “establishment” organizations like the Human Rights Campaign, Planned Parenthood, and Angie’s List?

Bernie Sanders, who she teamed up with the campaign for a former lawyer of his campaign against Sharice davids, is the one who identified Planned Parenthood as “the establishment”

It’s a political framework that both she and this comic have willingly put her in.

I “went after” the comic’s use of “the establishment,” which we know in this political climate is used to refer to Planned Parenthood and the human rights campaign.

I sincerely doubt that this book was written for people who haven’t been paying any attention to politics over the past three years

Bully for her. Does Devil’s Due know that? They’re the ones putting out this comic, they’re the ones who determines who “the establishment” is, you’re sure they’re going to forget the definition that was used all throughout 2016 and beyond by the person that Ocasio-Cortez has tied her career so closely to?

The only person I’ve ever heard accuse AOC of fighting against Planned Parenthood is you and this comic. You are literally fighting a straw man who only exists in your head.

You are right in that Bernie only threw Planned Parenthood under the bus once and then never mentioned them except as part of the “establishment” boogeyman he was fighting against. You think that’s becausw he was only declaring them his enemy once, and I suppose that could be interpreted as a valid interpretation of his rhetoric. But he classified his campaign as “anti-establishment” repeatedly during the campaign and afterwards, and he never said anything to even imply that he didn’t consider them “establishment” anymore

Clearly you’re okay with how the “establishment vs antiestablishment” framing of politics as inherently amoral throws marginalized groups and organizations that support them under the bus. I am not. You’re okay with Planned Parenthood being called the enemy as long as it’s only one time, I am not. This is a significant impediment towards having a discussion so, like I said, I’m out.

I don't think when people refer to the political establishment they are almost ever referring to Planned Parenthood and it's a weird read to make on the cover of a comic book about the very prolife Ocasio-Cortez.

I don’t think “pro life” is the term you want to use here.

No, it is in no way a stretch to connect this comic’s usage of “the establishment” as the enemy with the definition of “the establishment” that was used by the high profile presidential candidate who made opposing “the establishment” his primary talking point and who AOC decided to share a stage with as she campaigned for candidates who, like AOC herself, were supported by the PAC funded by a heavily pro Bernie news organization that she just so happened to be on the board of (as well as her chief of staff)

Bernie made “anti establishment” part of the political zeitgeist and he made sure that establishment included planned parenthood. To claim that this comic doesn’t remember that is absurd

I think you might be surprised at the number of people for whom that was a benchmark of his campaign. Attacking Planned Parenthood when they didn’t endorse him turned a fair number of people away from him and he doubled down on it when pressed. The fact that it wasn’t the only time he turned against progressive organizations for not supporting him doesn’t mean that wasn’t significant and goes to show that it was not a brief slip up

Regardless, if I were complaining about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, there are quite a few things that I would target before her willingness to tie herself to someone who lists Planned Parenthood as his enemy. Right now I’m talking about Devil’s Due’s decision to make a comic book in which Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign are the enemy.

Literally the first thing I did was ask if they were or were not going to do this. I have several times pointed out that my question was based on a fair reading of the current political environment in which this comic is being published. You’re the one who read all sorts of little things into that question and started us on this argument where you repeatedly try to read things into my own comments that were never there.

You clearly don’t need me in this conversation, so I’m out.

Yes, that was clearly a typo.

I did some due diligence and the "Bernie Sanders called Planned Parenthood the establishment" was in reference to them being part of the political organizing of the democratic party w/r/t endorsements during the 2016 election.

Bernie Sanders has a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood and I don't know where you'er going with this. This seems like a hyper specific grudge I'm somehow just hearing about in spite of having my brain turned to mush by constantly reading political hot takes all day.

Suffice to say, I don't think this (bad looking) comic was referring to Planned Parenthood when referring to political establishment.

PS: I used to work for the HRC on the bottom rungs of the ladder and I regret it because their lobbying threw transgender and nonbinary people under the bus and they are not worth putting your neck on the line for.

And campaigning for somebody else is at least questionable when she hadn’t even won her own district yet

Just from the two covers alone: first, needs more AOC "crazy eyes" and second, the "elephant" should be orange.

It'll be a real hoot if this thing gets axed two weeks from the release date and it turns out the big blow-up here was all for nothing.

The kind of thing that simultaneously evokes the Tom Lehrer quote about satire, the Peter Cook quote about satire, and the Kurt Vonnegut quote about satire.

I assumed this would one of those bio comics like the "Political Power" line (or whatever it's called) and not some nonsense like Barack the Barbarian or the one where Trump is standing in for All Might.

I mean I don't think Barack the Barbarian was nonsense, I thought a town of for profit healing mages was a decent allegory for US medicine.

But this is also the same company.
