In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

In the UK a patient has become only the second person to be declared free of HIV after a bone marrow transplant, though it's too soon to say that this is a cure.

The White House has said that Democrats are "harassing" POTUS 45.., which I sort of thought was their job in many ways. But then I think they might be looking to find anything to distract from the complete damp squib of the North Korea talks last week.

A senior Minister has quit the Canadian Cabinet over the Government's handling of a bribery case

My summary of the Brexit situation is perhaps best summarised by the fact that last week a topical news satire show gave a salient update on the current situation, only for me to realise that this was a rerun ONLY because the host happened to mention "It's six months to Brexit" when it's now less than four weeks.Sweet FA has moved forward and a lot of things have taken a lurching step backwards.

Apparently Fox dropped a digital Aliens based animated series last week. Did anyone notice?.

"Doom Patrol" continues to entertain, they even showcased a new (Well, new to me, I don't think they showed up in the Morrison run, but maybe in a later iteration?) personality to Jane, Silvertongue, who has a nicely televisual ability which she uses to great effect against some passing Nazi's. Also there's a terrific little cameo at the end of the episode which reminds us that the Doom Patrol was ludicrously weird LONG before Grant Morrison came along.

"Power Rangers Beast Morphers" launched, with a stronger than usual set up, and what looks to be an engaging cast, and possibly our first line up (even for three person core team), without a white male in the line up. I suspect the comedy relief security guards are going to get old VERY quickly... probably faster than Victor and Monty in Ninja Steel, which is REALLY saying something.

Oops, late addition which as token Brit I should probably mention, the next Pokemon games; Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. will be based in Galar, a Pseudo-British locale (In much the same way as Alolah is Hawaiian I guess).

Based on Alien Isolation?

I did not notice, but I love that game. The original scenario was by Dan Abnett as well, so I hope he's back on board for the expanded bits in the series. I'll have to check it out.

I wonder if the series ties up with the comic Dark Horse is putting out in the same setting?

I already did an NS post regarding the passing of Luke Perry, but there were two other entertainment deaths announced yesterday that had less of a comic-book connection.

Kieth Flint, singer of The Prodigy, who committed suicide last week at age 49, and former pro wrestler Christopher Pallies, better known as King Kong Bundy, who died of undisclosed causes yesterday at age 61.

It was a bad day.

Deadly Class is still really fun. Read some of the comics and I think I prefer the show.

Almost done with Umbrella Academy. I think for the most part it's a success, they've toned down some of the weirdness but there's still enough there. It doesn't seem ashamed to be a comic book show unlike some of what I've seen on Netflix's Marvel output.

Also figured I'd ask are there any horror type series people are interested in seeing posted here?

As of last Thursday I am officially “funemployed,” so that’s new.

Doom Patrol is great. Rita is the best. I was wondering about Silvertongue. I’ve never read the Morrison stuff so I’ve taken to watching the episodes with Jane’s Wikipedia page in front of me to catch all of the different personalities, and I didn’t see her there when she first showed up in episode two.

Star Trek Discovery has finally decided to stop Spockblocking us, and it led to one of my favorite scenes of the series, which I can only describe as “the real housewives of Vulcan”
EDIT: I forgot to say, it looks like this might be a borg storyline to me.

gen:LOCK seem to be very interesting american approach to Eva. Picture, plot, characters, mecha and enemy design - very, very good. Gender queer characters - unlike many shows I watch - very attractive, maybe agressively more attractive then straight.

I wish I could like or dislike things on the internet without toxic fandoms fighting with me and putting words in my mouth. Or worse, "agreeing" with me and putting words in my mouth.

With you there. I want to be able to like and/or dislike thing on my own based on my own preferences without assholes jumping down my throat, or deciding I need to be cheerled and co-opting my own personal preferences for their agenda.

Just dawned on me that I might be putting my words in your mouth too, so sorry for that.

How about I know a feeling that may or may not be similar to your feelings, but my statement stands on its own regardless of any agreement or disagreement. I'm having a weird day, my doctor tinkered with my meds again and I think it is starting to wear on my health as much as my ill health does.

No. That's pretty much what I meant. I opted not to include any specific examples because that tends to get threads closed even in relatively levelheaded communities like this.

I hope the new meds work out.

Oh, you know I think I might be part of what you're talking about with the way I replied to your comment on the AOC post. I didn't really mean to put words in your mouth, but I can see how it might have read that way (actually I meant to put another sentence into it that would have made the allegory statement more clearly just my own tangent, but intent isn't magic).

I certainly hope I'm not toxic, but I can be overeager sometimes. Anyway if the way I handled it caused you any distress, I'm sorry. I'll endeavour to be more clear in the future about what is my own thoughts.

Thanks. I honestly had forgotten about that exchange. We're good.

I just mean generally. It is something that happens here but it is WAY more prevalent elsewhere.

I just want to like a dumb cartoon without people assuming I subscribe to the insane politics associated with it.

I want to be wary of a movie about a character I don't like an not get lumped in with the man- babies who are just mad that the character is female.

I want to be able to talk about the problems with the new Star Wars without someone showing up to say Rey is a Mary Sue.

Also not you. No need to apologise. :)

I sort of feel like the type of people I'm talking about either ...
A. Lacks the kind of self awareness to consider that I might be talking about them.
Or
B. Just wants to watch the world burn.

Either way my complaint was never going to matter. Still, sometimes a person has to vent.

It was indeed the sausage one. As for Netflix, she did not specify and no one in the comments mentioned what it was either.

However, someone else did point out that Netflix took someone's cover of Phantom of the Opera for Umbrella Academy without permission. So, there's that too.
From: [personal profile] mrwalker
That was Lindsey Stirling's cover of Phantom that they used....they seriously didn't get her permission?! I watched the entire credits and didn't see it listed, but thought they must have worked something out...

"Call the Midwife" and "Endeavour" both ended their far too short 2019 seasons on Sunday, and they both managed to wring every last ounce of emotion out of me on their way. Especially "Endeavour", which managed to turn the season's running joke of C. Supt. Bright being given a defacto demotion to being head of traffic division, and having been in a PSA with a pelican, into something both heartwarming and fricking awesome.

Watched two manga adaptation on theaters.
Battle Angel "Alita" was great, the most faithful anime live adaptation I've seen so far. The casting was great too: after checking the manga (it had been decades since I read it), I've been surprised to realize how much the actors looked like the manga characters.
Nicky Larson, french adaptation of the City Hunter manga (or rather the anime), on the other side... I would lie if I'd say I didn't laugh, and I love distasteful jokes, but it often felt more like a random french comedy than a live action manga. My biggest grief are the OC who got too much focus and didn't bring anything to the story.

In The Walking Dead, a person who's been an extra since season 6 has gotten a name. Good on him, but I fear that Kyle might not survive ....the thing, which will happen at the end of this season.

The Youtube Algorithm, strangely recommended a video called "How Chris Chibnall Ruined Doctor Who". Look I refuse to believe that anyone can consider Chibnall's mostly decent work (with some shortcomings) as worse than how the show has been in previous seasons. Season Six, is a blight against us all.

I've been watching The Good Place. Does it start getting really good in episode five? Because it hasn't really been grabbing me yet.

Yeah I agree. I loved it from the start, but the season one finale is really where there's a big shift in the status quo (mind you I saw a review of the show that spoiled the first two seasons before I watched it, so I coming in I knew where it was going). I'm actually not sure what about episode five would be a watershed moment.

Also Zach, have you been watching season 3, cause I only watched it through Netflix. I was kinda surprised when I learned there was a season 3, because I thought a resolution was implied in Season 2's finale even if wasn't shown. Does it hold up, in your opinion?

No spoilers (I don't want to be sent to the Bad Place).

You know how the second season set up a stable status quo early on and then threw it away for the sake of that episode's plot twist? Season 3 is more of that.

I can't wait for season four.

It just hit me that the Good Place reminds me of a Grant Morrison comic in that there are so many great ideas that a lot of them are abandoned without really being explored. Also like GM, TGP isn't for everyone. I'm not sure that you should try to wait for it to get good if it isn't grabbing you.

YouTube has recommended me that video numerous times. IIRC, the title is actually something like, "How Chris Chibnall Destroyed Doctor Who," which I thought was amusing because 1) I'm pretty sure there's a new season already confirmed, 2) even when the show was "destroyed" (canceled), it came back, and 3) it's not like Doctor Who has always been a pillar of quality in the first place.

(Full disclosure: I haven't seen the most recent season yet. I'm going through Capaldi's Doctor right now, with a smattering of classic episodes here and there. I also have a really hard time trying to imagine a season worse than season 6, which almost killed my interest in the show.)

EDIT: Nope..just popped up for me again. It's "How Chibnall Killed Doctor Who." Which is funny, because I thought she could just regenerate.

I started We Happy Few recently. That's reminds me a lot of Compulsion Games' previous outing; a tad bit mediocre and fairly glitchy from a gameplay standpoint, but in my opinion the setting, characters, writing, almost everything from a narrative standpoint really, is so great and the concept well executed enough that I can overlook the game's flaws so far. I'm curious about if the DLC and Sandbox Mode are going to be released, though.

Oh, last week we got the news on Pokemon Generation 8. This time, we're going to England-ish lands with Galar with the new games: Sword and Shield.

The starters are all adorable, but I'm leaning towards Scorbunny personally. Though, the final forms will ultimately help with convincing me what to go with.
