This has everything I expect from Mark Millar:

Preternaturally competent protagonists and child murder.

We need an update of the old Frank Miller cartoon:

"Okay, Millar,we'll let you live if you can write a protagonist who is NOT an ultra super-duper genius who can do absolutely anything with ease and write a bad guy who has actual nuance."

Hay wait a minute, isn't that just a bit from the Invisibles but with small children instead of the homeless?

Remember when he said he created Huck because he was horrified that he'd contributed to a tonal shift in comics that allowed DC to get away with making the Man of Steel movie?

I guess that didn't last long.

Okay, Millar, the "talk the murderous bad guy out of shooting you by getting him to open up on his personal life and feelings bit" worked fine the first time.

ONCE.

I like it when it happens, but this one was so crude and clumsy.

Seriously, that read like something a low-rent motivational speaker would shill out.

Millar is really phoning this one in, isn't he?

Yes, Sherlock Holmes does this stuff in various adaptations. But we usually get a hint, A HINT, of how he does it. Like, what tipped him off about what.

An episode of "Elementary" had Holmes look at a bar's security video and say:
"I see two underage drinkers, an affair in progress, and a bartender who has been stealing from the till, not a single college professor." We don't get what he saw that revealed this, but it doesn't really matter to the main plot.

I've never cared much for Millar's writing style or his general sensibility, but he's always been great at coming up with interesting ideas (even if oftentimes those ideas are better when adapted by others).

At a glance though, this looks like Millar just pulling out a bunch of old tricks and tossing them at the page. Not very exciting.

That third issue is the first scans I've seen of this that actually makes the series more interesting; the hook of a 'a super genius who's addicted to putting his life in danger' isn't new, but a 'super genius who enjoys the challenge of fixing broken people and making them his allies' is actually a great idea...pity it's a side-note to the main action here.

Also: I know it's not the focus of the scene of the uber-evil villains (and again, I like the hook of villains are an advanced vanguard of invaders from a parallel dimension), but the boy with a high power rifle holding it like that should now have a black eye and maybe should be lying on the ground from the kickback of firing the gun that way. That could have been framed in way that it didn't distract me from the scene...although to be fair, the scene is pretty hacky, so maybe it's best this way.

Particularly nice touches are the walls filled with dead kids' heads and putting out a cigar on a guy's head. *sarcasm*

I did like the guy who fixes broken people. That could be interesting, but overall this comic is squicky.
