So last time I did this it was premature but now it's pretty definite... Disney now owns Fox.

Obviously the main concern is monopoly and the hold Disney has over the entire film industry at this point at least in regards to major franchises. Can't say I'm looking forward to the day when Disney runs everything.

Another big thing is X-Men and Fantastic Four are now in effect owned by Disney and can now join the MCU. (And coincidentally the Inhumans push seems to be dying down, Wolverine and the FF are back, the X-Men are finally doing stuff, etc) The Fantastic Four I can see working but the X-Men? I'm not too sure. Are mutants going to suddenly pop up now or are we going to pretend that Magneto and Xavier have been battling in the background all these years?

Plus... while Fox's handling of the X-Men was far from perfect I will say I'll miss the risk-taking they took with films like 'Logan'. Disney's idea of an 'edgy' franchise film was 'Rogue One'. We are probably never going to have a hard R-rated X-Men film again. (Of course there's still Deadpool who will apparently be the sole survivor of the original Fox canon but it's still not the same effect as having R-rated Wolverine.)

Movies like Logan and Deadpool will definitely be missed, but most of Fox's X-Men films were pretty bad -- nothing of real value is gonna be lost there.

I'm looking forward to the revisionists kicking in with "Disney ruining X-Men movies totally" just as they "ruined Star Wars" and acting like how suddenly the prequels were so loved.

I think part of the reappraisal of the prequels is revisionism, but consider that for a large amount of young people, those are the Star Wars movies they grew up with. For younger people that's just what Star Wars has always been, and a lot of them are getting to be the age were those movies now hold major nostalgia for them.

I don't think there's any comparison.

Of the prequels, Sith is the only movie that was really warmly received at the time. Phantom Menace was critically panned (possibly because the hype was too high) and while better Attack of the Clones got a more lukewarm response.

Fox's X-Men series basically revitalized the superhero movie genre. There have been some clunkers like Last Stand and Wolverine: Origins, but as a whole I don't think it's ever been treated with the disdain the prequel trilogy received.

Disney has been making R rated films since the early 90's through Miramax. They've been prepared for this. As for how the X-Men/Mutants show up...well, there is that reality gem. Maybe the heroes fix everything, by slightly altering history, which inadvertently creates them?

Exactly. It fits Deadpool for his humor and fourth wall breaking and Wolverine for violence. But last thing we want is someone thinking a great idea for the next Fantastic Four movie is them cursing constantly or throwing nudity into a Captain America film.

Yeah, on the business side of things I'm really not happy about this. The monopoly issues are obviously the most important, what with a massive chunk of pop culture now being owned by one debatably sorta evil and inarguably extremely litigious company.

On the fandom side I'm also not jazzed. The Fox superhero movies were wildly inconsistent and had a pretty dismal batting average, but there were some real gems in there, and at the very least stuff like James Franco's Multiple Man and Channing Tatum's Gambit would have been interesting had they actually gotten made.

While I still maintain that the X-Men don't need the framework of the Marvel U and Fox could have easily created a sprawling and compelling universe if they'd actually bothered to appreciate their source material, I can understand being excited about seeing the FF and the X-Men integrated into the MCU. I'm not super optimistic about the results, as personally I really don't care for the friendlied up and defang Spider-Man they have and hope not to see the same of characters like Wolverine or the Thing.

At the very least I'd suggest that this probably means we'll get fewer superhero movies per year and less experimentation. Disney probably won't want to put out even more MCU label movies each year, and they'll probably stick closer to the big names now, so while we can expect to see X-Men and maybe even FF, I think it'll be a long time before we see an announcement as surprising as Black Panther was originally. It bears remembering that the MCU looks the way it does today because of right issues, we'd never have gotten Iron Man and certainly not Captain America if a safer bet like Spider-Man or Wolverine had been available at the time.

Man, everybody talking about the X_men and here I am, alone, caring that FANTASTIC FOUR is gonna be in the MCU. I mean, I should probably care and talk amore about the one company having monopoly over everything except the space program, but this is a comics site.

Really, I don't really see any need for X-Men in MCU. I know that historically, the disconnect between the X-Men and the rest of Marvel was less then sitcking to their own corner and more them being so popular and huge there was no need for lots of crossovers, but they are still much their own lil verse. The biggest exception is Wolverine and I'm pretty sure the last thing people want is X-Men being yet again "Wolverine and friends".

But man, MCU genuinely NEEDS Fantastic Four. They are the center of the Marvel, the first family. Spidey and Johnny, Ben and Hulk, so much iconic dynamics to see for the first time. But more importantly, the it brings us Doctor Doom, the logical next new Big Bad after Thanos.

*sighs*

The march toward consolidation continues, I see. Forget the military/industrial complex! We've got a handful of media giants controlling everything. Guess that'll make it easier for any sinister cabal out there to get their message across.

Truly, I've been delving into JFK assassination stuff as I do periodically, catching up with the latest information, and the thought of a super-secret elite herding events to results of their liking doesn't seem so tinfoil hat anymore.

Also, coincidences can happen, but when they keep on happening over and over? Sorry, went off on a JFK tangent there, but it's fascinating to find out that the Mayor of Dallas on November 22, 1963, was Earle Cabell, brother of Charles Cabell, one of the CIA chiefs canned by Kennedy after the failed Bay of Pigs operation. Earle was in charge of the motorcade route that led to Dealey Plaza. And if I told you how many people turned out to be CIA connected to Oswald, you'd know the coincidences weren't quite all that.

Entertainment monopolies are, as the people on this comm know, just as important as other businesses. Possibly more so, as entertainment can serve as propaganda for groups that want to 'educate' the masses on certain issues. Like the CIA, BTW, with their Operation Mockingbird (infiltration of major media starting during the Cold War).

I thought the Gifted's cancelation was independent of this. Isn't Legion coming back?

BTW I just got around to seeing Into the Spider-Verse yesterday. I'm annoyed that Sony is just now allowed to make Spider-Man cartoons after the Marvel/Disney deal killed Spectacular. Big Hero 6 aside, Disney is surprisingly bad at making quality Marvel animation. Hopefully they let what's left of Fox make X-Men cartoons again.
