I've always been in the camp of the idea that, for all his grimdark posturing, Bruce actually really loves being Batman (And why not because being Batman is fucking cool as fuck). I mean yeah there's his responsibility and his guilt about his parents, but sometimes he probably just looks around in his big cave filled with crime fighting stuff and trophies of his past victories, and he's like "Fuck yeah, Batman."
And him and the rest of the Batfam dressing up as an incompetent minion to sabotage villains schemes is like the most awesome thing ever. A lot of writers want to emulate the Silver Age (Usually by killing off or shaming new and interesting characters to shove in their predecessors, or retconning characters back to their previous states like what happened with Batgirl) but then you get guys like Dini who do Silver age style stories right.
There's a lot to that perspective! I really like the view that Batman's interpretation of justice is that of a child's, where life isn't fair but it should be. With that comes a lot of the joys of childhood--maybe even of having the best childhood a person can ask for. All the best toys, the coolest gadgets, the best of friends, and no one ever dies or gets hurt (if they didn't deserve it.)
Batman's a concept that works on multiple levels. I like that about him.
The 1994 Zero Month issues covered that. There was a "Here's why Bruce didn't join law enforcement" explanation. IIRC, it varies from "Lots of paperwork" to "Having to carry a gun" to "What's the law vs what's justice."
I remember that being summarised nicely in an old story where we see Bruce recalling taking a Law course at college, and being appalled at how much the Law and his idea of Justice differ, and knowing that he's not going to make it if he sticks to the Law. (IIRC it has to do with whether Person A who helps steal a car with Person B is liable for a vehicular manslaughter that Person B commits whilst driving, but after Person A said they wanted to get out. Bruce thinks they shouldn't be, the law says they are)
