I think what happened was, he shot the film and handed in a 2 hour 20 minute working cut, before final post production was done. The Execs took a look and freaked out thinking they had another BvS on their hands and demanded LOTS of re-shoots, its been pretty consistent that whatever cut Snyder handed in was not accepted, the Studio didn't like it AT ALL. That would be the point Snyder would have bailed because as far as he was concerned the film was done.
Snyder here is coming across much like he did when he blamed the audience for not getting the 'Martha' scene in BvS not on the fact that the concept of the scene was excellent but the on screen delivery fell flat. Similar situation, studio didn't like what he delivered, but as far as he was concerned it was a great film...WB just didn't see that.
