Yeah, in a certain I understand the decision to focus on the mystery as it allows them to cut out stuff that didn't touch on that, but even there they somehow made it more boring. Like in the Snyder version the Mother boxes are entities with their own agency and presence, which was lacking in the Whedon version. Add to that that the mystery of the Boxes isn't actually that interesting as, as you pointed out in the other response, in the Snyder Cut their purpose is more to reflect and tell of the people asssociated with them.
Also, to repeat myself here, it is astonishing how much better the team aspect functions in the Snyder Cut. One of the most bizarre decision in the Whedon version is when in the final fight Superman comes in, smacks Steppenwolfe around and then peaces out leaving the rest to handle the fight. Like what the actual hell was that? It reduced the rest of the team so much while here you are able to easily identify how crucial everyone is for the final resolution.
