Cass is investigating the appearence of a new drug, called Soul, on the streets of Gotham, only to find that a bunch of criminals's girlfriends have banded together to form their own gang.

Unfortunately, one turns out to have superpowers and smacks Cass around in a way that causes Cass to OD on the drug they're pushing.

Cass' representation of Bruce is the DCAU version? Okay, make sense. *laughs*

People are busy, so Barbara has to call someone she rather wouldn't on account of him hurting her feelings... I can't remember how though. Might have involved Huntress or Tarantula,

Dinah's legs are in plaster due to events in Birds of Prey, a guy broke her legs and stuff.

Hallucinations continue,

Oh, and those of you wanting Dick/Cass interaction (no not like that), here's some. Unfortunately Cass saw that Dick made Babs cry earlier, so isn't that happy to see him.

That sort of thing was a kind of running joke in the series, considering this is what happened the second time Cass was drugged up...

Awww, poor Cass. I find it interesting that all her "good" internal manifestations refer to her as Batgirl, while only the "bad" manifestation calls her Cassandra.

I'll get you for this, Captain Pollution!

Every time I see that panel, I'm struck by the way Good Cass reacts to defeat like a corny supervillain.

haha, I wish I could make an icon out of that angry cass face on the third to last panel, but it's too elongated

I will never stop "WTF"ing at Horrocks' Tim. I liked the Soul arc quite a bit, Leonardi was such a great fit for Cass that it would've been a shame when he was replaced with another artist if that artist wasn't Garza, but man, on what planet is Tim a crazy horndog?

Now that I think about it, a LOT of Horrocks' stories were about Cass and boys. Cass/The Black Wind, World's Finest ... Romance?, the Soul arc, "Are you trying to kill him or kiss him?" ...

Same planet where Babs would make Cass wear a bikini, obviously.

That's a planet I'd love to be on! Hubba hubba. Also, I love that Cass' hallucinations look vaguely like DCAU animations.

I got the feeling that Cass didn't expect Tim to have a 'wow, you look really good' reaction to her wearing Babs' costume. And Tim's no more taken to an extreme here than others.

I just love how Dick comes across here. He's being beat up by his friend for a reason he can't discern, but his response isn't "*flailreturnassault*", it's "What are you doing?" and "?!".

But hey, his friend Clark would approve!

LOL! It's true. He probably doesn't even assume she's drugged. It reminds me that the last time he talked to Tim he got physically attacked too.

I can't decide if it's cute that Cass thinks about boys that much, or creepy that she's worried about how she looks physically to other people.

Well, the thing is that she can tell how/when people are attracted to her.

There's an issue later in her series, where she walks into a seedy bar and the art shows all these crusty older me staring at her, and the internal monologue text just says something like "sometimes it's awful being a girl".

Wait, what? Scans/Link please!

Also, I really want Cassandra to be Kate's new sidekick. I think they'd make an interesting pair.

Wasn't this after Babs dumped Dick while he was dealing with Tarantula, basically heading towards the Blockbuster death? I think that's the reason she doesn't want to call him, that she's mad at him, but not for a thing he did to her so much as being himself in a way she couldn't take anymore. I remember thinking it was kind of ironic here that she seems to assume it was the other way around.

Though the guys here are all funny. Is she just picking up that all guys are horndogs from Babs' and Bruce's interactions, I wonder?

Okay, wow. *That* is a fascinating thought. And if so--and actually, from all of these scans, Babs and Bruce have a thing or two (or, you know, way, way more) to learn about mentoring Cass.

from all of these scans

Or, more correctly, from Cass's story itself. I love that she's such a one of a kind character.

Tim's being a horndog at least because when Cass wore Babs' costume one time, it was shown very distracting to him. So I'm sure she picked up on it.

I like to think that Tim has a super sekrit tiny crush on Cass that he would absolutely die if any of that Batfamily ever found out about. HE LIKES PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO HIT THINGS OKAY. See also: Kon and Steph.

Thanks for posting this. All my Batgirl issues are floppies and in storage so it's been awhile since I read these. Just seeing them reminds me of how AWESOME a character Cass is and why exactly I (and so many others) are so P.O.ed are angry that not only did DC turn her into a cackling card-carrying villain/killer but now have had her give up her cowl and disappear to make way for yet another white blonde (because Wonder Girl and Supergirl and Speedy weren't enough for DC). I like Steph but Cass/Batgirl during the Puckett/Scott era was THE comic that made me read them on a regular basis so she'll always have a spot in my heart.

Also, good writer could have used Cass's thoughts on how Dick treated Babs as part of Dick/Cass's present tension and estrangement - except to do that someone would have had to actually read any of the Puckett/Horrocks/Gabrych run of Batgirl. Which no one at DC lately seems to have done.

Some other things:
1. Has Cass ever seen Bruce with the yellow oval outfit? I can't remember him wearing it in years (he did for a short period when the Burton Batman movies were out but even that was years ago). The yellow oval period actually represented a kindler, gentler Bruce (at least until the 90s). I wonder why Cass would think of that in a negative way.

2. The White Angel Cass makes me of what she would have looked like (minus halo) had DC taken up Gail Simone's "Angel of the Bat" pitch for the character. I always found it interesting concept (even if would have been utterly derailed once a new writer who didn't have respect for the concept took over). Now that Cass is no longer Batgirl I've been wondering about a new costume for her - I think an all Batman-ish blue ensemble with echoes of Daredevil would work but the all-white is an intriguing too.

"Gail Simone's "Angel of the Bat" pitch for the character."

That's where Cass would have turned to religion, right? Did she ever say extensively what she wanted to do with that?

Date: 2009-09-21 06:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jaybee3.insanejournal.com
Yeah. She had a whole post/thread about it in on her YABS board at CBR. But it was quite awhile ago.

"The Angel of the Bat" was interesting concept but once Gail left the book I'm pretty sure that someone who would take over the title or some writer in another title would just abuse Cass (like Robinson did to the BoP in "Weep No More for Justice") and make her conversion to Christianity into a joke. Ironic, since Gail is in avowed atheist and yet personally I wouldn't trust anyone more to take seriously a hero's religion than her (she's the one who had Huntress going to back to church). She takes the character's development and continuity of character more seriously than any ideological point or gimmick (rare these days sadly) and rarely has them act out of character (and when they do there are reasons). As someone said in another thread on another post "How can you not love Gail Simone?".

Well, a surprise tied up Robin is always welcome so thanks for that! :)

Note that Batman is DCAU, but the others looks more like themselves. She needs to watch now cartoons.

I won't even comment on Dick being used as the "jobber" to show how badass someone ELSE is.

Yes, a single time each, in two separate situations, neither of which he went into expecting to be attacked by her.

Considering how repeatedly she can tag Batman himself, like, whole strings of consecutive blows when he's aware of and actively anticipating her attacks, I don't see how this is a below-average performance for Dick.

He appears to be blithely wandering in between a fight between a chemically altered Bruce and Cass, which anyone would tell you is a remarkably stupid place to decide to be. I can imagine Dick doing it with the best of intentions, but not getting not just hit but surprise blindsided in the process.

Oh, Cass. I'm sure Dick has had a good cry over Babs a time or two.

But god, it's sad that so much of her fears revolve around other people's perceptions of her body. Fear of not being attractive, fear of being attractive, fear that people only tolerate her because of her physical talents, maybe even a fear that the Cass inside might not even exist, given that no one seems to really see her. I really need to read more Batgirl.

So do we ever get any context as to just what Bruce and Tim are doing when they're called? I mean, are there actual stories from their own books that this is referencing, or did the writer just come up with random stuff for them to be involved with? I mean, a mob of mustachioed men in derby hats and a creepy spider-creature - sounds like some interesting stories.

Hahaha, I like Cass's hallucinations. Bruce comes off as the Dad that expects you to always get good grades, pass in all subjects, Babara comes off as the over bearing mother-figure "My poor, baby" and Tim & co. comes across as the traditional High School teenagers while Nightwing seems like some sort of uncle/big brother type, he is the only one aside from Bruce/Cain/Babs to not make a joke about Cass's body.

Say Bruce you might want to meet General Lane for a beer to discuss about parenting young girls.
