Baroness Zemo is actually Heinrich Zemo reborn in to a female body. She claims that this was all part of a ruse, but I wouldn't put it past Helmut Zemo to marry his father in a female body.
Turns out it's from the same architect who designed the house from the Vincent Price version of "House on Haunted Hill" which has a giant vat of acid in the basement.
Which no one has taken to draining or removing or covering at any point...
Seriously, why are there no covers or nets or something in case of situations like this? It's like someone is actively tempting fate that they won't take a nosedive straight into them...
