In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
In the UK, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates an unprecedented seventy years on the throne and as Head of State. Opinions differ on the Monarchy, but her staying power is impressive.
Also in the UK, our esteemed Prime Minister reacted to the release of papers saying that he and his Ministers had behaved improperly... by proposing to rewrite the rules so that Ministers who had behaved improperly would not be expected to be fired if caught and it is deemed a minor case by... the Prime Minister.... Not sure that's the lesson we were hoping he might learn, but the lack of surrpise is palpable.
Oh, and touting the suggestion that Brexit means the UK would not triumphantly "allow" imperial measurements to be used in shops... despite the fact we were never banned from using imperial measurements, it's just most people have now grown up with metric (or are able to handle both systems) making this perhaps the most blatant bit of nostalgia power distraction in... well, weeks days for this bunch.
The Star Wars Celebration happened over the past weekend, with many a tit-bit dropped, but most of the trailers and panels not being released to the general public. I can see the desire to make the events there exclusive, but given the past couple of years, one might have hoped they'd embrace the more open approach. Oh well... at least we had the first two episodes of "Obi-Wan Kenobi"! and a trailer for Rogue One prequel "Andor"
The Simpsons had Hugh Jackman as guest star in their season finale "Poorhouse Rock", which is basically a deconstruction of late stage Western capitalism and the demise of the middle class in musical form.

Date: 2022-05-31 09:56 am (UTC)On a funnier and brighter side, a herd of cattle escaped recently and is wrecking havoc in a rural region of Poland, led by a tonne weighting bull who attacked a tractor to protect his family and friends. Go cattle, go!
The Owl House aired its second season finale, and even though it was intense, I still believe the series would have worked better as a movie. Seriously, most anime movies I watched had more going on in 90 odd minutes than TOH in 40 episodes. I liked the inspiration they took from the Centaurworld in portrayal of the villain, and I absolutely adored how the new villain turned out to be like. Disney has a tendency to portraying chaotic reality warpers as the final bosses to be killed to imprisoned forever, but this character for me reads like a child who is not intentionally malicious and has to be taught compassion rather than be killed or imprisoned again. Queer romance is appreciated, but the story moves on so slowly I couldn’t enjoy it the way I normally would.
During this month, I’ve read Nubia Coronation Special, DC vs Vampires, and Legion of X. I more or less liked all of these comics. Damian Wayne is one of my favourite characters and I love how he is portrayed in the elseworld series. Both Vampires and Nubia series have an unusual amount of compassion towards traditionally mishandled characters, which I appreciate greatly. I also loved the storytelling depth in Legion of X and Blindfold finally coming back. I’m still waiting for Batman Annual and DC Pride Special, both published today. For non-comics, I was re-reading Kossakowska’s books, about which I talked on the top of the comment. Unfortunately, they all seem worse upon rereading. Out of curiosity I also picked up sever supernatural nonfiction books from my town library, and unfortunately the most recent of them are from the 90s, so the “mysteries” they are dedicated to have mostly been solved already.
I am writing about Chinese cuisines and dishes and it makes me hungry. Shame I don’t have access to anything I’ve been reading about.

Date: 2022-05-31 10:00 am (UTC)Batman: Contagion. I was worriednthat reading a Batman story where he fights a plague would be in poor taste, especially with all the incompetent/crooked authority figures. Then there are all the rich jerks holed up in their swanky apartment block while the poor plebs die outside. Obviously they have never seen any of David Cronenbwrg's early work. Also, obvious Masque of the Red Death homage is obvious.
Deadpool Classic Vol. 8. More specifically the death of Deadpool. Inevitably, he comes back but his personality gets split up. It is revealed to be a convoluted plot by Thanos, who is jealous because his waifu loved Dradpool instead of him.
Doctor Strange Masterworks Vol. 6. The end of the Englehart/Colan run. The universe gets destroyed, only to be remade by Eternity. A crossover with Tomb of Dracula. A trip through time to find out the occult history of America. Also, Clea is feeling overlooked, so she is easy pickings for a thirsty Benjamin Franklin.
I also hatched on the idea of downloading samples of some of the trades I have bought/on my wish list to make sure I haven't wasted my money. I especially enjoyed Marvel's Monster of Frankenstein. The sample I read only dealt with the early issues that were an adaption of the Mary Shelley story. I don't know what the other issues are like when it changes to original stories.
Anotjer highlight were the various Atlas era titles. Menace, Journey into Mystery, etc. I'm not sure what to make of Atlas era Venus yet. I'm not entirely sure what genre it is supposed to be.
I enjoyed the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi. I didn't have any idea that (SPOILER) would be the main focus. I reckon that one Jawa is Mephisto. (Or has that joke been done to death yet?)
I will probably miss next week's post because I will be away and the internet situation is uncertain. It would have been my niece's birthday, so my family has made a tradition of going to the seaside around that time.

Date: 2022-05-31 10:21 am (UTC)The show is good, but it's impossible for me not to get extremely frustrated about the very obvious cuts that had to be done when condensing 2 seasons into 1.
I know the crew worked their ass off to at least address the major plot threads, but major plot threads have never been why I watch a show. It's the small character moments that draw me in. And I'll be forever bitter that reunions and interactions that I was desperately looking forward to were shrugged off with a throwaway line to explain that they happened offscreen.

Date: 2022-05-31 02:01 pm (UTC)The "IT" influence was really huge this time.
That being say, it's odd that the original main characters may be the one whose story-arc I enjoyed the less (well, them and Will's mom). The oldest teens realy made this firts half of S4 for me: great banter and interactions.

Date: 2022-05-31 11:40 am (UTC)I wish they were able to gather as much money as youtuber Bob Lennon, though. The dude managed to get half a million in a couple of days for his second "you are Billy" gamebook.
The first one was very fun, to be fair. I may get this one too.
Maliki is also doing their annual crowdfunding. Not going to participate this time, since I'm not interested with the novels. Although it's nice that they got NIcky Larson's voice actor for the audio book. I would have considered purchasing it if they got NIcky Larson's bad guys' voice actor (but they would first need a way to communicate with the deads)

Date: 2022-05-31 11:38 am (UTC)I've decided that it's important to enjoy the little things in life, like commissioning art on niche fan-ships you like.
I think I'm going to try and start painting again. That will hopefully give me something to do. My previous hobby was finding art of a niche fan-ship, but I think I've seen it all now.
Apparently they've made Top Gun 2. I bet it lacks the undercurrent of homo-eroticism that made the original such a classic (I've never seen Top Gun, everything I know about it is from Archer).
If the Obi-Wan show isn't eight episodes of him living as a hermit and having visions after drinking cactus juice, what's the point I ask you?

Date: 2022-05-31 11:49 am (UTC)Memorial Day was stormy, so finally got around to watching the last few episodes of Re:Creators. Don't remember exactly why I hadn't finished before, something to do with the streaming service it was on. I miss the Fanfiction Mailing List, which had some stories like this.
Over at my blog, I look at a 1950s juvenile mystery: http://www.skjam.com/2022/05/30/book-review-ginny-gordon-and-the-broadcast-mystery/

Date: 2022-05-31 11:56 am (UTC)…ON TO THE BREAD AND CIRCUSES…
The current Nightwing arc of Young Justice continues to be unintentionally amusing.
Black Lightning: Now that I’m running the League we can’t have any more secret conspiracies.
Superman: *whistles innocently*
The Doctor Strange readthrough has been a bit slowed because of life. Also, the Flight of Bones collection ends with a bunch of short stories that are fine but it’s a lot easier to keep going when invested in a bigger story.
The Dr. Strange: Flight of Bones mini had me scratching me head and wondering what the deal with Topaz is. The only time I remember encountering her before was when I was buying the Witches mini off the stands and she sure didn’t look like that. Is it an illusion, some Dr Druid/Droom “white mage becomes Asian for a while because of eastern magic” bullshit, or something else? Wikipedia “helpfully” says she has two forms as if that actually answers anything. Maybe I need to reread Witches; I’m always up for more Jennifer Kale.
(It’d be weird if Topaz – and not Moon Knight – is the reason I finally read Werewolf by Night)
I also dipped into the 2015 Scarlet Witch series and like the way they switch artists depending on location (wish they’d spent more time in Greece). I do find it very funny when Wanda is constantly surprised that people know who she is. I almost added something last week about Doctor Strange getting recognized but I was having trouble organizing my thoughts*; the Wanda stuff is just hilarious. Her costume has never covered her face. She wears the same colors as a civilian. She attacked a military base when she was in her teens and that prompted public protests when she first joined the Avengers. Those comics were published six decades ago and it’s not like she’s kept a low profile in the years since then; word has had time to get around.
*It seems to be less a “secret identity” thing and more of a “levels of fame” thing. Famous in the medical, supernatural, and superhero communities but obscure to everyone else…until one too many media reports of him fighting alongside the Avengers. Yeah, I totally get why he limited his assistant to one fanboy question a day in the Waid run. Good thing his magic house keeps the paparazzi at bay … unless you’re talking about Peter Parker (“I thought you said you sprayed for bugs, Wong!”).
Anyway, I don’t want to jump right into the Death of Doctor Strange so I guess I’ll read the Ewing Defenders or something next. I have a general idea on what to expect thanks to the scans posted here.

Date: 2022-05-31 12:18 pm (UTC)Enjoyed Kenobi (although the lack of Jar Jar makes me sad) and got quietly excited by the news/trailers from SW Celebration. Andor looks especially up my street, but then I loved Rogue One so that's not a surprise. Still trying to find time/willing to watch the new Stranger Things episodes...been so long since the last one, House Llama*'s desire to watch it has faded a bit.
Right, back to editing together my 'Jubilee special' podcast episode (not that I care too hoots for our royals, but the title might gain it a few extra hits. Tee hee)
*Our house words are of course, 'See me sprong'

Date: 2022-05-31 12:48 pm (UTC)... I went in expecting it was just going to be a load of multiversal macgubbins, no more and no less.
Then came the reveal.
Spent the rest of the film in the state known as bloody furious.
(taking some mild amusement from the fact that after saying the best way for the MCU to introduce X-Men and Fantastic Four stuff would be to just have them there, this movie did exactly that.
Nya-ha-ha! Nya-ha-ha-ha!)
That was not how I was expecting Clea to appear.
Probably about the most sudden way to do it, though.
Played the Skywalker Saga.
There's an old Simpsons Comic where Professor Frink had devised a ray gun that removes filler, sideplots and all that tedious mucking about from books and films.
This game feels like someone did that to the Star Wars films.
(Funny how The Last Jedi is so much more bearable with less Canto Bight... Rise of Skywalker remains exactly the same.)
Re-read the 2011 Justice League International for research the other day.
What a load of nothing that was.
And it got cancelled for an equal load of nothing in the form of Geoff Johns' Justice League of America. yay?
Also, re-reading some stuff, the last issue of Ewing's Ultimates describes the fourth Eternity very explicitly as "he". And Ewing's Defenders has the fourth Eternity as quite clearly very distinctly not "he".
Gender-fluid anthropomorphic personification of a universe. Neat.
Watched that Obi-Wan.
Takeaway: "Hey... this kid's a wise-ass!"
In fairness, everyone and their mom's noted how Luke takes after Padmé, and Leia took after Anakin. This is just further demonstration.
Also, disturbing thought: Obi-Wan's story is just one of the Old Man X stories, isn't it?
So this week in Young Justice, we learned the Kaiser Thrall thingie is actually a character from DC.
And, uh... yikes.
I understand that the comic version of that character is not terribly popular for being an obnoxious little jackass, but still. Damn.
That's a horrible thing to do to anyone.
... a little girl commented on my hair a while back.
Seems it was really unnerving her because she just wouldn't stop (until her mother got very upset).
It's just hair. Okay, there's a lot of it, but still.
Not like it was gonna eat her or nothing...

Date: 2022-05-31 03:07 pm (UTC)However a lot of digital comics that were previously available to purchase on the Comixology website (RIP) and app were never made available in the Kindle/Amazon stores so I guess indy publishers and readers are out of luck.

Date: 2022-05-31 06:19 pm (UTC)Everyday Heroes: a new version of D20 modern including supplements for movies (currently including Pacific Rim, Skull Island, Highlander, Excape from New York, The Crow, Universal Soldier, Total Recall, and Rambo

Reposting from last time:
I don’t know anything about the Gotham City Chronicles miniatures game, but I saw they had a “season 3” kickstarter that included figures for Ghostmaker and Punchline as well as (ugh) The Batman Who Laughs, so I felt compelled to share (seriously, it’s a bit if a problem)
There’s also a corresponding RPG.
It’s a lot of money (miniatures games always are) but if you’re interested you can check it out here:

Television recommendations for a first grader
Date: 2022-05-31 10:22 pm (UTC)Phineas and Ferb
Milo Murphy's Law
Lego City Adventures
Bluey
All good shows, but we're a little tired of them and are trying to point him in another direction.
Here's the problem: I, of course, could list any number of the action cartoons that I either have myself or seen others enjoyed over the years, but he doesn't seem to be particularly interested in action. If anything, he seems to be drawn to creation and creativity over destruction and fighting (and, yes, I know they're not strictly exclusive.
So any recommendations on shows like the four I listed above?
Re: Television recommendations for a first grader
Date: 2022-06-01 01:44 am (UTC)Honestly a lot of the better modern children’s shows that spring to mind (Owl House, Gravity Falls, Star Vs, ect) might be too dark and/or weird for younger viewers.
How about Ducktales? (either version)
Actually, something evergreen like Looney Tunes or Scooby-Doo might work because they make a new version for every generation anyway.
Speaking of older shows...
Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
Dexter's Laboratory
Animaniacs (though the new stuff is aimed more at adults that grew up on the original)
Tiny Toons.
