"Yeah, it’s interesting because as this idea about gender equality was brewing up inside of me and I was combing through Kirby’s pages and pages of work, I saw that a lot of that stuff was already embedded in his world and the way that Darkseid and his Cronies talk about Granny and the Furies. It was really fascinating. I feel like I’m pulling directly from his world and highlighting the color or turning up the volume.

Kirby knew that women were capable and strong and equal, but he also knew that wasn’t [widely seen to be] the case in his present day. So that’s stitched in there. The way men comment on Barda’s body. The way that men on Apokolips talk about the Furies. The way Gilotina, who’s not in my book, handles a handsy guard. The way that Granny treats her own girls. It felt like a real ripe time to take a look at these kinds of issues within the context of a story that was already inherently commenting on it and addressing it.

Women have been enduring these kinds of stories of not being able to advance in fields for years, and even with progress being made, we still face challenges. Look at all the headlines these days. It’s amazing that we’re saying enough. With the Fourth World, I thought it would be interesting to see an awakening on the level of a Me Too movement, but on a planet where everyone is really the bad guy — even the gals – because everything is heightened."

In the 1980s and 90s, the Superman comics were undergoing something of a refit, with creators such as John Byrne (who has become contraversial since for different reasons) being one of the architects of the post-Crisis Superman side of things.

Part of that change came in the form of this baffling two part story, where DC in their wisdom thought that it would be a good idea to have Superman and Big Barda getting mindcontrolled into taking part in porn films as part of an exiled New God's scheme to finance his future invasion of Apokolips.

I'm 100% serious.

From Justice League International (80s version) #19

When we last left our heroes...

...Manga Khan had sent Lobo to kill the JLI space team, who were pursuing him to free the captured Mister Miracle, who the Cluster is taking to Apokolips. Barda, not wanting to kill their foe, teleported Lobo out of their hair. Unfortunately, where he landed was the JLI headquarters in New York. Even more unfortunately, he hit Guy Gardner on the head on his way in.

The Earth JLI doesn't know this mysterious visitor, just that he looks mean. They realize their problems are even worse when Guy has announced he's reverted to his old, obnoxious, personality.

A lot of us preferred the old pre-The Killing Joke Joker of the 70s and most of the 80s. Unlike the version since, there was so much variety in the types of stories you could do with him. You could do dark. You could do comedy. You could do dark comedy. It was whatever the writers felt like doing, that day.

Here's a story that was published the same day as The Killing Joke. The Joker has been contracted to kill the JLI. As this is the BWAHAHA era of the Justice League, you can guess how well that's going to go.

A cold, hard look into the terror and violence of insanity. Or something.

I've been following the new digital Sensation Comics, and thought I'd share some of the stories so far. Three stories below, around 6 1/2 pages each of 20-page stories.

Jack "King" Kirby would have been 96 on August 28th and all over the internet comic creators are celebrating a man who was one of the architects of comics as we know them in the West.

It would behoove scans_daily to do the same, I think (a little late in my tine zone, but still valid in the US)

In the pantheon of comicbook characters, there are some that people can't stand even if other people seem to be big fans. In my case, there are probably three characters that I have an intense dislike of.
