"Yeah, part of what I want to play with is this juxtaposition of this role that he has in Squadron Supreme as this billionaire head of a major corporation, but then also looking at how is he capable of playing that role while also looking at what's going on on the streets of Chicago? So in that regard it's like, okay, Squadron Supreme can go up against these incredible forces that are working to destroy the world, but how come they can't save kids on the streets of Chicago where crime is running rampant?

If you look at real life, Chicago is just plagued with crime. It's got one of the highest murder rates in the country. This is what he needs to tackle and in a lot of super hero books, we see heroes tackling these great big global problems. So the question then becomes if you can save the world from ending, but you can't save people from getting gunned down in the streets, are you really doing any good?"

"He’s meaner, he’s nastier, and he’s more personally conflicted—he’s suffering from more existential dread [than the SUPREME POWER version]. [This version] makes that guy look like a tame little pussycat."

"There [are] references to other characters in the Marvel Universe so that we know that they exist; for really long term geeky fans of Marvel, there’s going to be a character that pops up—I don’t want to give that away because it’s a major supporting [cast member] that no one is going to be expecting to see."

Let's hear it for them, the Squadron Supreme! The mightiest champions of humanity on now-extant Earth-712, a world blessed and cursed with but a fraction of the superbeings that roil the omniverse!

The talk about IDENTITY CRISIS led to talk about SQUADRON SUPREME. A backup story in WEST COAST AVENGERS ANNUAL #4, the "Saga of the Serpent Crown," gives a recap of an Avengers/Squadron Supreme team-up that ends with an ominous look at the future.

In the previous issue, Nebulon unveiled his plan to help humanity through Celestial Mind Control, which manages to be even skeevier than it sounds. Valkyrie voiced her objections to strip-searching, and Chondu demonstrated that being in the body of a fawn doesn;t make him harmless.

So, five pages from seventeen of "The Defenders" #35, plus a Hostess ad.

Last issue, we learned that Jack Norriss' mind is in Chondu's brain, which is in Kyle Richmond's body. Chondu's mind is in Bambi's brain and body. Kyle Richmond's mind is in his own brain, which is in a shallow dish. The other Defender's minds are in their own brains and bodies, but may not be right any more. The Headmen's HQ is in ruins, and Nebulon is back in town.

Which brings us up to The Defenders #34, five pages of seventeen (nrrgh) and dessert.
