Japan, as one might expect, has its own set of traditions revolving around holidays. Valentine's Day, for instance, has been imported from the West, but the rituals around it have grown very specific. Only girls give gifts on Valentine's Day, and that gift is almost never anything but chocolate. They give simple store-bought 'obligation' chocolates to any boy they'd consider a friend, and those aren't considered to mean much at all. But for that special someone, they're supposed to go to more effort -- buying fancy, expensive chocolates, or for the ultimate touch, making something at home from scratch.

Boys are expected to return the favor exactly one month later. March 14 is a holiday known as 'White Day,' when boys give white chocolate to any girl who gave them chocolate on Valentine's, and maybe fully begin a relationship with one. (You will be unsurprised to learn that White Day was invented entirely by the Japanese candy industry.)

Nowadays, though, there's a growing awareness of people who don't fit the mold -- especially in anime and manga. What do non-straight couples do on Valentine's Day? Some authors have answered that question, sometimes even drawing on their own personal experience...

Hi everyone,

Since it's National Coming Out Day today, I'm listing my top 5 coming out yuri manga titles. (Yuri manga = Japanese comics with woman x woman or girl x girl romance.) They aren't listed in the order of my favorite to least favorite- just the order of when they popped into my head.
On to the list! )

Someone posted about one of Shimura's other series, Hourou Musuko (Transient Son or Wandering Son), a few months ago. Sweet Blue Flowers starts off with an older crowd. On the surface, it may look like just another "childhood friends are reunited" story, but it's so much more. It's about sexuality and friendship and crushes and growing up. It has subtlety and realism.

I posted these scans this time last year, on the old S_D...I figured I might as well repost them again, rather than have them lost...lost to time. *cries* Besides, I posted them for International Day of Femslash, and it's the second one, so, hey.

I'm a big fan of Hideyuki Kurata and Ran Ayanaga's Read or Dream manga, the follow-up to Read or Die - it is, in fact, my favourite manga currently commercially available in English, and in the running for my favourite ever. The entire RoD series - Die, Dream, and ROD the TV (loosely based on Dream) - is pretty full of yuri moments... For Dream/the TV, that mostly focusses on Anita...primarily her relationship with Hisami Hisaishi.

Which...is the focus of these two posts.

In reference to the rules changes since then, this post, and the second one, are a total of 28 or 29 pages (it's hard to add up the partial pages) taken from throughout volume 4 of the series, which is about 220 pages.

Takeuchi Sachiko's Honey & Honey is an autobiographical manga. Though some of it is educational (intended to show people what Sachiko's life is like as a sexual minority in Japan, and clear up misconceptions), it's mostly funny stories about Sachiko and her friends.

The art is not for everyone, but I think it's cute and suits the style of the story. If you like Plica, you'll probably like this too.

In honour of the return of s_d (even if it's not to lj), I...well, I'm gonna repost the last thing I posted on the old one. If it was good enough for LJ, it's good enough for IJ, says I!

I bring you (once again) 5 of the first 6 pages of Kurogane Pukapuka Tai. (They're a little on the large side, but not dial-up breaking.)

Manga, right to left, and all that jazz.
