Avengers (1998) #2

The world has been remade by Morgan Le Fay's magicks and the Avengers have been ensorcelled to do her bidding. Captain America tries to break the Avengers out of it, but some of them are far too in to the fantasy.

I love that Hercules's Medieval costume is just his classic costume. Bonus points for Dane being dressed as Sir Percy as well.

Damn, this book is amazing. I loved how Busiek just told Perez in script "George, i trust you, just do what you want here" and Perez gave him exactly what he wanted and more.

Busiek's Avengers run was the best ever, far as I'm concerned.

So many wonderful details. My favorite is Machine Man: here called "Sir MacHinery", after a children's book by Tom McGowen. It was a favorite of mine -- and his, as I discovered when I asked him on the old Astro City listserve.

When people disrespect Clint Barton, show them this, and remind them that he is one of the truest Avengers.

As are Jan and Monica.

But not Tony. Fuck Tony.

I always imagine the conversation must have gone something like:

"Hey George, I'm going to need you redesign about 37 Avengers costumes to be cod-Medieval, but still recognisable for a couple of issues max, I know it's a lot to ask on the second issue bu.."

"Okay Kurt, I've just done designs for 43 of them whilst you were talking"

"I only need 37"

"And your point is?"

I love that Hercules's Medieval costume is just his classic costume.

As I recall, when Kulan Gath pulled this stunt on Manhattan Selene remained her regular self because she'd been around in the Hyborian Age that he was reverting everything to. 6th century Hercules probably differed very little from late 20th century Hercules.

So while I buy 1) Cap thinking Iron Man would be one of the true believers, 2) That not being the case (Cue the now memetic "Disband the Avengers" panel and 3) Hawkeye's theory on why Tony would be hard to break from the spell, altogether it seems muddled and maybe contradictory.

Like, I get why Cap, Monica, Wasp, Quasar, Justice, and even Hawkeye have both the strongest sense of "Avengers Identity" and what you could call a sense of 20th century civic-mindedness ( I feel that kind of leaves She-Hulk out, but maybe she liked being with the F.F. more, and the setting caters to the "savage" part of her nature), but I do think if Hawkeye felt some Avengers might have a Retvrn brain, that doesn't go without saying.

Really, it should have been a Red Flag for Morgana that Cap's Ren Faire name is, while more antiquated, if anything a less prestigious title than "Captain"

Also, it's funny, as mentioned before, they wrote Spidey out of this before the adventure really got going, much like how Kulan Gath intentionally "spared" him when he pulled this trick himself, and would do so again not too long into the run. Spidey's a hard guy to medievalize.

Spidey's a hard guy to medievalize.

You say that, but he's worn an awful lot of armor over the years (both literal and plot)

Let's just say I'm not a huge fan of Spider-Armor, canonically, or Spiderversally.

Very late to the party, but:
Steve manages to break Hawkeye out of magic brainwashing just by staring really deeply into his eyes.
(And yet, weirdly enough, doesn't seem to have ever generated any Capeye slashfic.
...
... not that I've ever looked for any.)

... ahem.

Hawkeye's explanation for why Tony is so easy for Morgan to brainwash seems like a good explanation for why he's been so easy all the OTHER times someone's done it as well.
(Which is like, twice. But that's three times too many.)

And not to completely question the artistic skills of Mr. Perez, but setting aside questions of historical accuracy (which can be dismissed by reality warping and Morgan being a lazy so-and-so)... wouldn't plate armour be somewhat entirely counterproductive for Black Widow?
Unless she's so good at spying she can do it in heavy armour.
