Happy Scanniversary!

I gave the mods a heads up, but didn't hear anything back, so I'll make the post that Fifteen Years Today, Scans_daily was permanently suspended from LiveJournal.

What a Saturday morning that was!
Stubbleupdate: I crawled out of bed on Saturday morning (which meant that the community would have been deleted late evening/night on Friday, America time) and saw that my inbox had a lot of LJ friends requests from people on the community. I get that sometimes, but four overnight is unusual. They all wanted to know where the community had gone, which is the first that I had heard of it. A lot can happen in six hours on the internet.

And the oral history
What the mods said
What Comicvine said
What Comics Should Be Good said
What MGK said
What Fanlore says
What Kevin Church said (the page is gone, but he said "fuck 'em")
What Peter David said
What Peter David said later
Welcome to Noscans_daily

The community has persisted, in some form, over the last 15 years. There has been a churn of members, some new posters establishing themselves, some posters vanishing. Some I've lost contact with (whatever happened to the poster who posted DIAF? I wonder how she feels). Some I've stayed friends with. And some I've kept an eye on because they're fascinating creatures to be studied.

And, since this is likely my last post here, and I was a mod on two communities, Ask Me Anything and I'll answer as honestly as I can.

The obvious question: Why is this likely your last post?

2) Do you feel the tenor of the community has changed over the years? And if so, how?

As a fellow out of touch old bastard, I completely understand. I haven't yet reached that point of dropping off--I've been enjoying reading the GI Joe posts (much to my surprise) and a few other threads, but I feel you.

I had to laugh at the MGK post back then--I think a day or so later he posted a follow-up, and I actually got the "top comment" award on that one. It wasn't terribly nice, but hey, I was proud to be a smartass about it.

I do feel bad about what's become of PAD, honestly. No one deserves that.

I keep wondering whether we should convert the comm to Discord sometime, or at least have one as an auxiliary. That's what all The Kids are doin' nowadays, and it having its own image-host means it'd be a lot easier to share pages and panels.

The thing that I appreciate about this format is the tagging system, that if there's a scan I enjoyed today I can find more of the creators and characters in the archives.
Discord isn't actually ephemeral but it's functionally ephemeral. It's great for live interaction but not async

It does have a robust search function (that admittedly was much better a few months ago)

It's an idea, though I've loathed these "always accessible" thingies from ICQ days. Sometimes I even feel like chucking my cellphone. Yeah, yeah, get off my lawn and all that.

But, anyways, why not both?

I had the idea to maybe set up the infrastructure a year or so ago as I was having a lot of fun on another Discord posting panels of my reading of Larry Hama’s GI Joe alongside two others who were going through old Batman and Spider-Man issues at the time, but the idea that I would have to mod it promptly killed whatever enthusiasm I had for the project

I've wondered that too.

Dreamwidth isn't the most user-friendly platform for posting content.

Seems like there are a lot of successful Twitter accounts that just post a handful of comics pages or panels with a short commentary or no context at all. Granted, even when it was a semi-functional website, posting on Twitter felt like shouting into the void so I'd worry about losing the sense of community.

Discord might work.

Sorry to see you decide to go. I don't know what it is you like to post, offhand, but I do like seeing what people decide to share here! Some is to my liking, some isn't, but I always enjoy the discourse inspired by what's posted... I'm always happy to see older stuff shared alongside the new releases. :)

I love this community, it's always worth checking every day to see what weird treasures people have found. And I'm glad the mods have kept such a tight rein on the few rules, to make this a respectful, intelligent, and sometimes rather horny (for Nightwing's butt) collection of people.
