I gave the mods a heads up, but didn't hear anything back, so I'll make the post that Fifteen Years Today, Scans_daily was permanently suspended from LiveJournal.

What a Saturday morning that was!
Stubbleupdate: I crawled out of bed on Saturday morning (which meant that the community would have been deleted late evening/night on Friday, America time) and saw that my inbox had a lot of LJ friends requests from people on the community. I get that sometimes, but four overnight is unusual. They all wanted to know where the community had gone, which is the first that I had heard of it. A lot can happen in six hours on the internet.

Welcome to Noscans_daily

The community has persisted, in some form, over the last 15 years. There has been a churn of members, some new posters establishing themselves, some posters vanishing. Some I've lost contact with (whatever happened to the poster who posted DIAF? I wonder how she feels). Some I've stayed friends with. And some I've kept an eye on because they're fascinating creatures to be studied.

And, since this is likely my last post here, and I was a mod on two communities, Ask Me Anything and I'll answer as honestly as I can.

The obvious question: Why is this likely your last post?

2) Do you feel the tenor of the community has changed over the years? And if so, how?

The community and I are out of step. I am not interested in what it posts, and it is not interested in what I post. Nobody wants an out of touch old bastard stinking the place up, so I'll take myself somewhere that feels more suitable.

As the community has shrunk over the last fifteen years, there's been a definite loss of diversity of content and posters. That's inevitable as the userbase decreases. There is less to discover on here as only certain types of posts generate traction and engagement.

Fifteen years? Where has the time gone? I remember trying to log in that morning and then going googling. I think I didn't find anything that time, so was left very confused. That GMT+2 can be kind of a detriment.

Anyways, that question since you gave the option. Why is this likely your last post? If the reason isn't that personal, or if you just don't want to talk about it publicly, that is.

Yeah, that was a stressful weekend. Each message you respond to, ten more appear in their place.

And, since Comixology died, my weekly comics purchasing has dropped off the charts...apart from The Witcher and She-Hulk. I've picked up DC Ultra (they gave me a paper copy of Death of Superman for free because I'm so cool) and those issues are released a month after print and digital, which means that even the books I still read, I'm not able to join in the conversation because I'm a month behind. And honestly, I don't miss it.

Thank you for everything you've done for this community. I don't comment on every post I click on I'm not naturally chatty., but your posts over the years have had a genuine impact on me and my reading habits.

I don’t understand how Peter David in 2016 can frame not posting his comments as a punishment when he sure seems to have made his intentions quite clear (scans=lost sales) back then. Even the “I would totally give permission if they asked me first before posting” perspective doesn’t make not posting his stuff a punishment

Anyways, sad to see you go, but I am at least a bit envious of anyone capable of just stopping something that’s been a significant part of their life

Everybody knows if it wasn't for spoilers, David would have tripled sales of X-factor.

Whether Big Shocks are sustainable ways to build a book is a matter for somebody else to discuss.

And as Freakonomics' The Upside of Quitting says quitting something that doesn't work for you frees you up for something that does.

Besides, I've barely posted in the last 6 months. I'm pretty sure that nobody has, or would, miss me.

I imagine he thinks a few pages or panels can be good promo, but half an issue or more (which S_D was doing at the time) can start being a replacement for actually buying the book.

The big companies release preview pages of their upcoming books every week, but that doesn't mean they'd be okay with someone posting half an issue. Or that movie companies would be okay with folks streaming half a film just because they choose to release trailers. Same idea.

as someone new to comics and this community, i had no idea of this history, so i'm very interested to hear from people who were there when it happened in these comments and from those linked posts. thanks for being here for so long even though i wasn't present for most of it!

I was responsible for the second Peter David debacle. I was mortified, I’m a big fan of his work his work and I was still relatively new here and I didn’t know the extent of the bad blood between this community and him.

It's a very different landscape.

I used to talk about comics on forums for various comics related websites with existing communities but those sites either don't exist or are a shell of their former selves. Now people have to find their own audience on Tumblr or the like.

I always thought of SD as more promotion than actual piracy but the underlying discussion of piracy has certainly shifted with the slow death of physical media and entertainment companies actively destroying their back catalogs for taxpayer-funded government handouts.

I have been on Scans_daily since the early 2000’s on Live journal. When there was no limits on the scans you could post on the site. Or when Gail Simone was a member for awhile.

I miss janegray, jlroberson, bluefall, skjam, jlbarnett, kamino_neko, dr_hermes, sailorlibra, mysteryfan, sistermagpie, espanolbot, droop, pyrotwilight, starwolf_oakley, proteus_lives, gargoylekitty and the hefner. Cheers to them. 🥂

You do know that dochermes is on DW now, posting original fiction? After his pop-culture blogging exhausted the image allotments for two LJ accounts (dr_hermes and dochermes), he devoted a third and fourth to posting his original pulp fiction (olddochermes and olddochermes2); the Midnight War Universe, an unapologetic millennia-spanning recombination of all the corny genre fiction he ever loved, is something he’s been writing for his own personal amusement since childhood.

I suspect he’d be surprised and delighted to hear from you.

I’d like to add numeronone, beoweasel, tigerkaya, joetuss, captainbellmanhonestly, heck there’s too many to list. I just miss everybody who goes. Everyone knows everyone here, this sort of community feels super rare in this day and age.

I've always been a massive lurker, but I've here since at least the late 2000s, back when Superdickery was relevant. This community is what launched my love of Moon Knight decades before the Dracula memes. It has directly influenced me in buying comics, from getting into House of X to enjoying a LOT of Si Spurrier's stuff--Crossed, Angelic, Spire, et al. Scans_daily helps me keep my comics knowledge from going out of date, and it's a credit to everyone who remains here. Thank you so much for all your contributions.

Hunh occurs to me that I might also be an old. Alas I was actually - not that active during the LJ exodus. I suspect I was busy with college. I DO remember the XFactor scans that brought the whole mess down though.

I also vaguely remembering ganking my sis' internet while out of town to grab an invite code for here during the ScansMigration.

Still nice that scans-daily exists - in at least some form still. Even if it is very different from the old days. But all things change.

First of all, a profound apology from the Mods to stubbleupdate.

I didn't get your message, though sistermagpiedid, and she mentioned it to me and I think we just each thought the other was messaging you back. No slight was intended, and we hope none was taken.

As a result of your prompt we had briefly discussed celebrating an anniversary (as I mentioned on last weeks Off Topic Tuesday, I had some on topic news and this was going to be it), though we were aiming more towards our phoenix-like ascension after sd 1.0 went down, when we relocated to first insanejournal, and then to here on Dreamwidth, rather than our rather traumatic eviction from livejournal, but we can see why that memory would linger.

I have that date down as being the 27th Feb, so the Mod Team at that time were REALLY on the ball.

Yes. DMs and email chains consumed the whole weekend, and then much of the week after.

And after the initial feel good vibe went away it was back to reminding people how to behave, and that was before we would freeze threads. Some posters would rack up three extra infractions while you were typing out your response to their first one.

I will always have complicated feelings on the incident but I'm not sure any good can come from bringing them up again.

I totally get the need to take a break but I hope it is just a break. I'll miss having you around.
