[personal profile] stubbleupdate posting in [community profile] scans_daily
I gave the mods a heads up, but didn't hear anything back, so I'll make the post that Fifteen Years Today, Scans_daily was permanently suspended from LiveJournal.

What a Saturday morning that was!
Stubbleupdate: I crawled out of bed on Saturday morning (which meant that the community would have been deleted late evening/night on Friday, America time) and saw that my inbox had a lot of LJ friends requests from people on the community. I get that sometimes, but four overnight is unusual. They all wanted to know where the community had gone, which is the first that I had heard of it. A lot can happen in six hours on the internet.

And the oral history
What the mods said
What Comicvine said
What Comics Should Be Good said
What MGK said
What Fanlore says
What Kevin Church said (the page is gone, but he said "fuck 'em")
What Peter David said
What Peter David said later
Welcome to Noscans_daily

The community has persisted, in some form, over the last 15 years. There has been a churn of members, some new posters establishing themselves, some posters vanishing. Some I've lost contact with (whatever happened to the poster who posted DIAF? I wonder how she feels). Some I've stayed friends with. And some I've kept an eye on because they're fascinating creatures to be studied.

And, since this is likely my last post here, and I was a mod on two communities, Ask Me Anything and I'll answer as honestly as I can.

I don’t understand how Peter David in 2016 can frame not posting his comments as a punishment when he sure seems to have made his intentions quite clear (scans=lost sales) back then. Even the “I would totally give permission if they asked me first before posting” perspective doesn’t make not posting his stuff a punishment

Anyways, sad to see you go, but I am at least a bit envious of anyone capable of just stopping something that’s been a significant part of their life

I imagine he thinks a few pages or panels can be good promo, but half an issue or more (which S_D was doing at the time) can start being a replacement for actually buying the book.

The big companies release preview pages of their upcoming books every week, but that doesn't mean they'd be okay with someone posting half an issue. Or that movie companies would be okay with folks streaming half a film just because they choose to release trailers. Same idea.

That still wouldn’t translate into being “punished.”

Punishment as in denying the chance for the posting of a few pages/panel for promo.

If he wants to release a few pages or panels to advertise his work, there’s nothing we could do to stop him. He has full control over when and what is revealed, the exact scenario he asked for. If he doesn’t like this situation he has every right to complain about it but to phrase it as a punishment is dishonest

Edit: regardless, I don’t see how “not doing free, unprompted advertising for him” can be honestly described as a punishment

It's more like "forbidding folks who want to do advertising for him from doing so."

And just to be clear, I know punishment wasn't the mods' PURPOSE behind the rule. They just wanted to be extra careful about avoiding future legal problems. My point is "50% scans = lost sales" is no way incompatible with "no scans period = bad."

"not allowing folks who want to do advertising for him from doing so” doesn’t equate to punishing either

Regardless, your summary of what he said doesn’t actually map to what he actually said. It was clearly more about what was posted than about how much of it was posted. He’s had similar meltdowns to every time people talked about a plot twist he put in one of his books

Gonna leave any semantics debate about what rises to the level of 'punishment' to others. I got no skin in it. The part I push against is the idea that "[50%] scans = lost sales" is inconsistent with thinking a blanket ban of any scans period is harmful or hurtful.

"Regardless, your summary of what he said doesn’t actually map to what he actually said. It was clearly more about what was posted than about how much of it was posted."

In the links stubbleupdate posted at least, it's all about number of pages, not how spoiler-y they are.

So if you're pushing back on something I never said and which has nothing to do with my own issue with Peter David trying to frame us not posting his work as a punishment when he's shown no sign that he has changed his mind on not wanting us to post his work, why are you doing so as a response to me and not, say, as a response to the thread in general or somebody who actually said what you want to push back on?
