It's honestly amazing HOW MUCH was going on with the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix sags simmering in the background. Real, true, longform storytelling. Something I admittedly have a love-hate relationship with. When its done well, it's great, but it can just as easily make things feel like not much is happening.

Here, it's a masterclass.

And with this storyline, "body and soul" has evolved to its final form, after a brief stop at "mind and body and soul".
... though I'm not sure how the "body" part applies with Jean, but Chris has a phrase he likes using, and by gum he's gonna use it.
(making a drinking game out of times it's used in this story is... inadvisable.)

Funny how the narration's saying Jason Wyngarde is just an alias he's been using, when pretty much every story has it being... his actual name.
"I have disguised myself as... myself! Fiendish!"

Emma had those giant go-go cages just ready to go, huh?

She's really a flat character at the moment. Not even a glimmer of depth. She's just smug and kind of generically evil.
Actual traces of depth won't come until New Mutants, and that's a way off...

... also funny how the animated adaptation managed to remove the whole "X-Men get captured" bit of this and nothing of any value was lost.
Well, not "ha-ha" funny.
