So, they're going to entrust the robot designed to drain powers and imprison people to the Guardians? The same Guardians of the Universe who historically have an extremely bad track record with robots and / or contingency plans?
The Guardians were probably dancing, huh. "Jordan, this is so painfully asking to backfire we should've done it!"
As someone who genuinely loved the Johns Green Lantern series and the rainbow corps in particular, what is going on here and is there a chance I might want to read it?
Maybe? It's the continuation of the regular Green Lantern series and the concluded Green Lantern War Journal series.
In the regular series, the United Planets is secretly led by a Durlan who can somehow manipulate the emotional spectrum, has arranged the destruction of various corp power batteries, and subverted the GL Corps into more of his own personal army, while the Earth Lanterns try to reveal and stop him.
Meanwhile, turns out the Guardians created a fallback power battery on Earth and it's been made available to Hal and pals. And Jadestone, the Amazo who sucked up Alan Scott's power, developed a conscience, rebelled, and is now its protector.
Meanwhile, John Stewart came into possession of some ancient artifact, the Darkstar Ring, and um... stuff happened. Like now his mom's soul is in his GL ring, his dead little sister is a sentient and independent ring construct, John may or may not be a god who ascends from time to time... I dunno, I read his series and I'm still kind of baffled at times.
But anyway, now we have evil Mogo who's gonna eat a planet. Enjoy!
His name is Caolán Shepherd. He showed up in In Green Lantern: War Journal series. He is from an elseworld universe. Shepherd is a younger Lantern and one of the last members of his universe's Corps.
He came to the prime universe to investigate an terrifying force of evil known as the Radiant Dead.
That's Shepherd. He's one of the last remaining GLs from an alternate universe. No idea which one, I don't think it's been given any particular designation.

Edit - Actually, it kinda makes you wonder if someone did a Pluto on him.
