Guardians of the Galaxy (1990) #34

Written by Michael Gallagher and pencilled by Kevin West.

After reading The Crossing, I am starting to think Rita DeMara should have stayed in the 30th Century.

Elsewhere, subplots are a-brewing.

It looks like Rancor's Youngblood's Disease is flaring up again. The main symptom is disappearing pupils. It comes and goes, depending on the artist.

I see Rancor is familiar with the custom of plotting behind the other villain’s back.

Argh! Now Aleta has Youngblood’s Disease! It’s spreading!

Given everything, Rita would've been a lot safer fading into nigh-total obscurity like Aleta (when's the last time anyone saw her, huh? Or Talon? Or whatsername from Guardians 3000?)
Better obscure than ignominiously dead.

Doom legitimately paying someone a compliment, without even the slightest backhandedness? Maybe he's chan-
"Now, to work these people to death!"
Ah, there we go.
(though for some reason the thought of Doom using reality TV to enslave people just seems so... lowbrow for him.)

Doom's gratuitous vocabulary word, because " overwork " is clearly an untranslatable concept.

I don’t even know why they brought her back to the 20th century just to die in the Crossing either. Absolutely pointless death of a decent character.

I can see some of the why; killing a named character to raise the stakes, but without having to killing a bigger name character.
So bring in someone from a cancelled comic (and a cosmic title no less! Like, major ick factor!), kill them off to indicate how serious the threat of an evil Iron Man is.

Still a terrible waste.

... and this is assuming logic was involved at all, which given The Crossing is not a safe bet.

And she was from the future, so she'd have knowledge of what happened.

Except that the Guardians future is a different timeline where Iron Man had shot all off his armors off to another planet and created a race of alien conquerors.

Kurt Busiek wanted her for Thunderbolts when he was cooking up the idea. Then she was killed off so he used Screaming Mimi.

Given how many other people in the Crossing and other events around that time were revealed to have been Space Phantoms or other manipulations from Immortus, I’ve always bee surprised no one used it to bring Rita back.

That is so unlike Doom to just act like he can go through thousands of people over and over. Sure, he'd run them like slaves, but normally he'd feed them and such, not just work them to death.

Karoshi! I know that game.

Just wanted to mention that you're mixing up your "clawed characters who've never been seen outside of this series." Rancor is the Wolverine descendent with the disappearing pupils. Talon is the catman who can click his talons as projectile weapons.
