Iron Man #127

Writer: David Michelinie

Plot: David Michelinie and Bob Layton

Pencils: John Romita, Jr.

Finishes: Bob Layton

Iron Man alone against Hammer's super-villain army!

Not really a good showing for some of these villains. The Beetle isn’t helping himself with that goofy armour.

With a job well done, Tony heads home to celebrate.

The next morning, Jarvis comes to a decision.

If I remember correctly, the text of Jarvis' letter of resignation was taken directly from the one that Dave Cockrum submitted to Marvel, and that nobody is sure who replaced whatever Layton and/or Michelinie originally wrote.

Oh? Well, that explains the "definitely not written by Jarvis" wording of the note.

Left off is Hammer ordering Water Wizard to attack and Water Wizard replying "are you nuts?! I nearly got killed in Nam and I was only facing an army then!" He then takes off on a water jetski.

Which makes him easily the smartest of the entire pack.

That scene's halfway between " Water Wizard's freakout is understandable " and " Water Wizard has innate superpowers and is in an environment more than conducive to them ".

"I'm not sure what 'keeled' means, but I don't wanna find out!"

All those Bond villains with their giant liars, but not a one of them can compete with Justin Hammer's mobile island estate.

(I know it says Romita Jr on art with Layton doing touch-ups, but that panel of Hammer pointing in that ridiculous way looks super-Buscema-y.)

Short for "keelhaul," perhaps?

... well, yes, it is.

But also in exaggerated French accents it's just how "killed" is spelled.

(It's a Simpsons reference. In one of the Radioactive Man comics his archnemesis, who speaks in exaggerated Eastern European, vows to use a device to revert him back to when he was powerless, "und zhen I vill keel you!"
Radioactive Man, being quite silly, declares the line to himself before attacking.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go hide behind this wall of shame.)
