Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Following recent legal challenges from the current US Administration, Harvard University is offering a free audit on their course on American Government and Constitutional Foundations, though you need to pay if you want the certificate at the end.

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Jem cartoon and doll line, Hasbro has had original singing voice of Jem Britta Phillips, rerecord six tracks from the original series, specifically for streaming in July. The first, a "reimagining" of the original theme was released early. (Sadly, no sign of The Misfits returning... as yet)

Doctor Who had a LOT of setup to do for the coming big season finale. I would particularly recommend this weeks "Doctor Who: Unleashed" the behind the scenes making-of series for each episode, which has a fascinating piece on how you design and create a set which is specifically to be used by people with multiple categories of disability, it's genuinely eye opening.

There were at least four other things I meant to mention but once again, deadline pressures mean I have to keep this short.

Reading the Ted Kord Blue Beetle series got me interested in checking out rhe Question's book. I'm glad I did because it is great so far. It had me at Lady Shiva.

I am also giving Richard Dragon: Kung-Fu Fighter another go. It has been such a long time since I last read it that it might as well be new to me.

I am also reading the entire Invasion event for my own enjoyment. I already had the three issue min-series in trade form, so it was just a matter of getting all the tie-ins.

I thought I might do the same for DC's other events. Like Invasion, I have the main issues in trade form just not the tie-ins. Thankfully, I have got the correct reading order noted down.

Here are some of the titles I am thinking of adding to my read list. Let me know if there are any you would like to see in particular and I'll let them jump the queue.

Black Lightning
Captain Atom by Cary Bates
Checkmate by Paul Kupperberg
Hawk & Dove (Hank and Dawn)
Infinity, Inc.
Kamandi
Manhunter (Mark Shaw)
Martian Manhunter by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake
Power of the Atom by Roger Stern
Secret Society of Super-villains
Teen Titans by Dan Jurgens

I'd be very interested in seeing posts of the Invasion mini. I've read the tie-in issues from Morrison's run on Animal Man and Veitch's run on Swamp Thing, so I know what the basic deal behind the event was. But not how the event itself played out.

Doctor Who 20th Anniversary: And now it's time for my fair, unbiased assessment of Steven The False Prophet Moffat's first Doctor Who episode.
Actually it's pretty good, has some good lines, an interesting mystery that flows well, and some nice bits of character for London during the Blitz (we have nightclub, military barracks and groups of orphans sneaking into houses and eating the dinner off the table while the residents are hiding in the shelters)

yes all part of his insidious plan to trick people into think he'd be a good showrunner....

well it looks like the live action Lilo And Stitch movie wasn't very good
who could have -wait what the hell vg raqf jvgu Anzv yrnivat Yvyb?
what the fuck writers? what does Lilo hand Stitch over to the Galactic Council as well?

what do you mean Gantu isn't in this version?
googgodalmighty......

Anyway it looks like season two of the live action Avatar show is going to feature a character they left out of the first season. I don't know it seems like Book Two is going to be eventual enough without having to fit him into all this....
We also got the first casting news for season three. Yes their going to do a version of The Puppetmaster and Sokka's Master

As someone who loves the original and who hasn’t enjoyed the majority of these Disney remakes, I’ve gotta say, I really enjoyed the new Lilo & Stitch and I find the hate for it to be massively overblown. It is good, even without the general unevenness of the first season trying to find its feet, though by this episode it has just about gotten there.

Still has a lot of Moffat's usual beats.
Repetition, twee children, repetition, trying to make a big thing out of "Doctor who?", his dislike of technobabble...

What’s the mods’ position on the Peter David ban? Do we lift it now that he’s dead, or do we keep it up out of respect for his wishes?

My city had its Pride this Saturday, two whole weeks early. Plus a truckload of different other events on the very same day so Choices Had To Be Made.

I actually really liked the new Mission Impossible, which was a surprise because I thought the previous five ranged from okay to terrible. If you want to see Tom Cruise get into a fight scene wearing nothing but his underwear, this is the movie for you. But also it had other good points.

Also I just found out that they're publishing a series of Golden Girls cozy mysteries.

Disney+ continues to be weird.
Can't watch any original programming on it.
So, any of the original Futurama is fine, but the most recent series? Nope.
(I mean, this has been happening on and off since August last year. C'mon.)

Captain America: Brave New World's out.
(Odd that it's out on DVD and Blu-ray before showing up on streaming.)
Still good.
... just a little quibble with the sound quality. At the cinema, it was too loud. The one I bought the other way around. Can't win.

Also: Family member I was watching it with, who drew a complete blank on Quantumania despite having gone to see it, did remember The Eternals.
Make of that what you might.

So, that Doctor Who?
Well, how about when - nope, wait. Oh, but how a- no.
Hey, Mel!
Wait, is that the same kid from "Space Babies"?

Decided to watch some ol' Who.
"Kinda" and "Snakedance".
Where Tegan gets possessed by a giant rubber snake. And yet somehow doesn't do as much as that sentence would suggest.
Like how the Doctor just seems to be perpetually irritated with everything Adric does. Can't blame him.
And his reaction to Tegan being controlled by an evil snake monster is less "oh, no! Tegan!" and "oh, for- Tegan!"

Thunderbolts Epic Collection vol 3's out this week (apparently). Woo!

Though thinking of that got me wondering...
It's just a bit odd that She-Hulk's epic collections seem to have stopped. And there hasn't been any for Carol Danver's modern stuff.
(Could've sworn there was one for Kamala's first run, but apparently not?)
Weird.

Speaking of things that may or may not exist, apparently there's an upcoming Ultimate Hawkeye series.
Which, if true, is neat.
(also, related note, the more I see of that cover for Ultimates 14 the more there's a feeling the words "focused totality" are gonna come along at some point...)

Wait, is that the same kid from "Space Babies"?

It is.

Reminded me of "We Happy Few", which isn't bad per se but the writing just seemed to be lacking in this first part.

I greatly admire humanity for what it can achieve but I deeply, deeply despise most of humanity for what it is. Two weeks ago we had first rund of presidential election in Poland. Nothing spectacular, exactly who we all knew to make it to the second rund made it to the second rund. However, other aspects of the election worry me deeply. When combined, all far right candidates made over 50% of the votes, and since people who voted for a far right candidate will always vote for any far right candidate, the only way the moderate right candidate has any chances of winning is by arousing mass movement of people willing to vote to stop the far right candidate. However, people are disillusioned with the ruling wide coalition because it did not remove ANY of the far right laws introduced by previous government. Abortion is still outlawed in all cases but danger to mother's life, same sex partnerships are still unrecognized, change of legal gender still requires suing your parents, and refugees are still being turned away from Poland, dying in large numbers on the border swamps. And I swear with each generation people get more 'trumpish', which I define as a combination of stupidity, arrogance, lack of compassion, pathological greediness and sadism. If only votes of those under 30 were counted, Grzegorz Braun would be the president of Poland, with 55,8% votes. You may remember that bitch from using a fire extinguisher to extinguish a menorah lighted in Polish parliament in memory of Holocaust victims or for blowing a vuvuzela during a minute of silence to honor the victims of October 7th in European Parliament. He also recently attacked a doctor who performed a legal pregnancy termination of a fetus who would have been unable to survive being brown (it's skull caved in because of bad bone formation). He should have been fucking arrested and prevented from ever taking part in the election. Yet majority of young adults see him as a role model, apparently. If I had the power, I would have sent half of humanity in time to Pliocene, naked as they were born, where they could find equal intellectual and cultural partners in australopithecines. That may be unfair comparison to Lucy and friends though.
Also, like, did Western media even mention that over the weekend Kiyiv and surrounding towns fell victim to a massive shelling unrivaled since the start of war, setting whole districts on fire??? It feels as if Ukrainians are completely ignored in countries not directly bordering her. Why isn't that on front page of every newspaper??

The shelling has definitely been reported on (at least from what I’ve seen anyway).

I am currently laid up with Bronchitis, so I have been binge watching Harley Quinn and The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy. I am excited for the next Doctor Who episode. I have been catching up on my reading, and I am re-reading Stephen King's Rose Madder, which I never thought got enough love.
I have not been doing much in the way of comic book reading as I am too sick to visit the couple of remaining comic book shops left in Sydney. I know I can buy them digitally, but I am old school and just love having the physical book in my hot little hands.
That is about it for now.
