The lesbian moments of Wonder Woman - Ongoing

Back at the old scans_daily I ran a series of posts titled "The lesbian moments of Wonder Woman", in which I listed the lesbian - or possibly lesbian - moments of the post-Crisis series, while wondering why the amazon couples were never allowed to do more than hold hands or peck on the cheek. Well, it seems we´re in for some good times now, as the current writer, Gail Simone, has featured plenty of lesbian amazons and shipperific moments in her recent run, and promises more to come in the near future. So let´s have a look at them, shall we?

What makes me ship Diana/Artemis is that to me, Artemis isn´t really the tough, manhating gal that she seems, she acts that way because she´s been raised all her life to see the world as an evil, merciless place and men as creatures to be hated and reviled, but deep down feels that it´s wrong, and Dianas way is right, and when Artemis is with Diana, she feels that things are going to be okay, and she feels good about herself. And to illustrate my point, an "awwww" moment between the two from "Secret Six", another of Gail Simones comics:

Later when Diana is stripped of her weapons and imprisoned on Themyscira, Artemis couldn´t be more furious to see her princess treated like that, if Hippolyta has Philippus to always be at her side and willing to die for her, then Diana has Artemis. The most shipperifc moment comes when, at the climax of this story, Artemis dives in to save Diana as she fights the Cottus underwater:

The main villain for the past few issues is/was an out lesbian, Alkyone had an amazon lover while she was the new queen of Themyscira, but killed her as part of her scheme. And that´s really all the space I´m willing to spend on her, while a good villain she hardly had the positive kind of relationship that I want to post here.

Philippus has had her moments too, when the amazons return to Themyscira, we get this reunion:

And when she escorts Hippolyta to visit an amazon who´s miraculously become pregnant, she makes sure her beloved queen is protected from the rain, it´s just a cute little detail.

I should add that it´s only on this page that Philippus bothers to cover herself as well, on the next two pages Hippolyta has the cape all to herself.

During a forum discussion of the gay characters in the current run, Gail Simone made the remark that we´d get a gay couple in the near future, but can´t say any more. So who will it be? Diana and Artemis finally getting their on-page kiss? Doubtful, as I´d be surprised if DC and Warner would out a major character like Wonder Woman (although, for the record, Gail Simone has stated that she thinks of Diana as bisexual), angry parents groups would have a field day. Hippolyta and Phillipus? Well, again, I don´t see it happening, as that would be outing the mother of a major character (Diana) as bisexual, again the parents groups would be up in arms. A new couple we have yet to meet? Possibly. We´ll just have to wait and see, hence why this post is titled "ongoing".

She's outted Achilles, so it seems like he might be the one to get into a relationship.

On who the couple will be--the next arc is another "super-hero" arc, outside of Paradise Island, so maybe it's just a regular gay couple somewhere in the DCU?

She's also been hinting we'll get some amazonian liplock soon. About time!

I love the imagery in that last page you posted. Which issue is it from?

I confess I'm not well-versed in the canon of Wonder Woman and the amazons, but surely there's been some lesbian loving on Themyscira. The very idea that there isn't any seems absurd.

Oh, yea, without a doubt. During the courting of Nemesis, it's all but stated that the courting ritual used was intended for two women.

How did they explain that pregnancy?

With all the Amazons being women and all.

And by themselves on that island for what, thirty two centuries? Even in the unlikely event that none of the Amazons were originally lesbians, I think it would be pretty much impossible to go over 3,000 years without falling in love or at least developing a physical relationship with someone. Diana's the only Themiscyrian Amazon it's even halfway plausible hasn't been in a same-sex relationship, and that only because she left for Man's World when she was still a teenager.

Ares 'gifted' several Amazons with pregnancies (which proceeded at amazing speeds). He then took the babies. It's not clear just how euphemistically he meant 'you will sleep and never wake', but it's clear nothing was good for the mothers after the births.

Oh man, the look on Hippolyta's face when she sees Philippus there, that is absolutely adorable!
