Okay well now if you enjoyed those things but do not know much about Jaime Hernandez and the Love & Rockets comic series that him and his brothers have been blowing minds with since like forever well then I will tell you then that you might very much like his actual comics stuff too! Not a lie! It's fabulous!

And now I will tell you more about Jaime if you like! IF YOU DO NOW LIKE IT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ! It's okay, my feelings will not be hurt. These are the characters Jaime's most well known for:

The Locas! Maggie Chascarillo and Hopey Glass, life-long punks, best friends, and sporadic lovers. Jaime been following them through their lives together and apart for years and they're still going strong, still trying to grow up, still trying to understand themselves and each other. This is a more current picture of Maggie:


Seems like Jaime's gotten a little bit obsessed with superheroes again as of late in his Love & Rockets: New Stories collections. His newest work brings a jumble of aging and newbie superheroines together into the generally mundane world of his favorite characters Maggie and Hopey and not nobody even flinches. Maggie gets positively giddy when she finds out that apartment tenants appears to enjoy an unusual nightlife...



...but her giddiness wanes a little when her sweet friend Angel starts feeling inspired to reinvent herself as her own kind of crime fighter:



Wooo-ha! They've put out some lovely giant collections of The Locas stories that make a great introduction to the stories now and I highly recommend them! OKAY REALLY I AM DONE NOW SORRY IF I CRASHED YOUR BROWSER COMICS ARE JUST SO AMAZING!

Without a second glance of looking at the costume I knew that was Kitty Pryde just by her face alone. That's how good this art is in capturing all those fine subtle details that normally get missed. Very impressive.

Hernandez is seriously an absolute genius at portraying character through body language, expression, body type, and clothing...and that's before he starts with his lovely dialogue! If I sound like a deranged fangirl its because I'm one who's been studying his art all semester. :D

I lost all my old Love & Rockets, sadly, but the Bros artwork and storytelling were things of beauty. BTW, Jaime did the Phantom Girl and Shrinking Violet entries in the DC Who's Who.

Oh that is tragic! I've only just this year took the plunge into Los Bros Hernandez and now I can't imagine how I did without them. Such skill and emotion and genuine passion. They blow me away every time.

I saw those pics again when I checked the tags for Hernandez - how weird! I'm so used to seeing the lamest/weirdest entries on MightyGodKing's blog that it breaks my brain a little to see a Hernandez brother sneak in there.

Oh you won't regret it! The sheer volume of their works frightened me off for years but I was lucky to find a library that stocked some of their work and that slooowly but surely sucked me in. I definitely recommend checking libraries first to sample since some of their best collections can cost the big buxx.

Very nice drawings. I like how his Wonder Woman drawings put a little meat on her bones but still make her look sexy. I especially like her face in the second drawing. She just has the cutest, "I'm awesome and I know it" look on her face. And as people have said above, the Kitty one is very well done. It just kind of perfectly captures her.

I knoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow ;_; As an art student who's been studying him all semester, I say to you -- WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ~sob~ And he's practically completely self taught! BAH! He attributes his style to a life drawing teacher he had once and also to his habit of visualizing everything he sees as I drawing. Which is...~sputters~ HE HAS A MAGIC BRAIN IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW

You know what I love best about Jaime Hernandez's art? It's not just that (unlike so, so many cartoonists) he has no issues with making the plus-sized (and, in the last few years, middle-aged) Maggie the protagonist of his stories. It's that he manages to make her every bit as beautiful and sexy as the younger, slimmer women he's drawn (including Maggie herself in her earlier appearances).

His brother Gilbert, in contrast, while a talented artist in his own right, seems to have chosen these last several years to draw pretty much only painfully, unrealistically large-breasted and tiny-torsoed women (at least in his Luba stories). I much prefer his earlier Palomar stories where the women characters came in all sizes and ages, and weren't all inadvertent walking advertisements for breast-reduction surgery and chiropractic.

I know! That's absolutely one of my favorite things about Jaime-- his respect and love for his characters shines out in every panel. Even his less "pretty" characters still have a weird charm to them...few are caricatures.

That's where I think I have problems with Gilbert's work too, I think...as time goes on I feel like his character designs tend more and more towards caricature, obviously with Luba and Killer and so on with the BoobyLadies. I recognize that he's trying to use these stereotypes for his own purposes but they really do get in my way of connecting with the characters and seeing them as three-dimensional. I just spend the whole time reading going "....her boobs are bigger than her waist?"

haha but goddamn that thing is huge. and the first stories are kinda dense. I might recommend just flipping through and taking a couple tastes here and there -- the Hernandez Brothers really excel in writing stories that can be picked up halfway along the way and still be enjoyed.

They do look short, and a bit stocky and oddly pointy breasted, but the faces all seem perfect Lynda Carter. I miss her in Wonder Woman.
