Models, Inc. #1

So Models, Inc was a miniseries originally solicited for February and has finally been rescheduled for August. Only the solicit is out at this time, no cover yet.

* Retailers please note that this issue will contain an ad for Marvel Subscriptions.

I didn't think it was worth posting at first. And then I noticed something had changed.

Here is the original solicit, see if you can spot the difference.

Who the heck is Toni Turner and why did she replace MJ?

And for legality this is the original cover for Models, Inc #1.

Hmm...taking out Mary Jane. That's kinda stupid. I though originally it might be to make sure to have MJ appear in Spidey first but she's appearing that month anyway in ASSM.

[identity profile] sandoz_iscariot.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, I want MJ. >:|

Ugh, and that cover just had to remind me of Jackpot.

And here's the cover from 2 which had MJ on it.

That's not LAND! You tricked me!

[identity profile] foxhack.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that has got to be the fakest smile I've ever seen. D:

[identity profile] neuhallidae.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
::squint:: Did they use Taylor Swift for the cover, or am I seeing things?

[identity profile] foxhack.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The solicit says some guy called "Scott Clark" made that. Yes, it feels like Land but it isn't him.

Wasn't this some stupid show in Fox?

[identity profile] tavella.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of wonder if they are planning on disappearing her further (not that she hasn't basically disappeared from ASM.) Like, dead disappeared.

[identity profile] seriousfic.insanejournal.com 2009-05-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So, is this the millionth time the "cover of a magazine/cover of a comic" thing has been done or is it just me?

[identity profile] box_in_the_box.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Marvel has a really weirdly creepy schizophrenic mentality about MJ.

On the one hand, everyone in Marvel editorial who seems to be in charge practically foams at the mouth when they mention her, because how dare that dirty whore Steal Peter's love away from his sainted Gwen (which only makes Quesada's insistence that Gwen/Norman in "Sins Past" is still canon seem all the more bizarre, since he seems to hate MJ as much as anybody), and yet, they've gone out of their way to turn MJ into Spider-Man's Lois Lane, to the point that NON-comics fans are actually the MOST likely to see her as Peter's Only Love. It's like, they WISH they could disappear her forever, but they CAN'T, and it's giving them ... well, MJ Derangement Syndrome. :)

I think they've also used that style for at least some of the Pride and Prejudice comic covers. Can't think of any other examples off the top of my head.

given that victor von doom's been showing up in a lot of evil plots to date (mentions of a Von Doom device in the Red Skull's... thing, plus what he's got going with Loki and Dracula), I half expect him to be involved in this too.

[identity profile] seriousfic.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I know Ultra did it, although they were cleverer about it.

[identity profile] darklorelei.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of curious, too. It seems weird that they would pull the highest profile character off.

[identity profile] timgueguen.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, including a pre Matrix and The Matrix Carrie Anne Moss.

[identity profile] timgueguen.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ooops, that should have been a post Matrix and pre The Matrix Carrie Anne Moss.

[identity profile] timgueguen.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Clark is probably going to be Land's minion. Instead of Land actually tracing stuff he'll have someone else do the tracing for him.

[identity profile] foxhack.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have very few problems with this Clark fellow because of these reasons:

A) He actually used a proper photo to trace from instead of a hodgepodge of different bodies and faces;
B) The girl looks pretty, not too plastic or anything like that;
C) The pose looks natural, not forced;
D) Even though it's traced, there's actual SHADING and COLORING
E) It looks just as photoshopped as pictures in a real fashion magazine!

[identity profile] lissa_quon.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
No its not, Land would have probably looked better than this.

[identity profile] bariman1987.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
And for their next trick, Marvel reveals that Mary Jane is related to--or in fact is--Dr. Doom!

[identity profile] thandrak.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but this is supposed to look preposed and plastic and sanitized. That's how these things look on grocery store racks.

[identity profile] janegray.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
GASP! I just realized, Mary Jane and Doom are never in the same room together!

[identity profile] rabican.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I could swear these exact same cover designs have been done before, but I can't place them. Anyone?

Also, wtf on writing out Mary Jane, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Models? Divas? Cripes!

[identity profile] milleniumrex.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think there's a non-sinister answer to this. The Marvel solicits for Spider-man this month have MJ making her return to ASM. The odds are, Marvel didn't want her appearing in two books because they wanted the Spider-man writers to have control over her editorial direction. Whatever that is. *shudder*

[identity profile] greenmask.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's for girly stuff! Because girls love magazines!

[identity profile] greenmask.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
From the people who brought us Wolverine: He's On Every Team, and but how can Peter reveal his identity in that book when in this one it's impossible!

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, tee hee! How silly of me, how could I forget? It must've been all that shoe-shopping and painting my toenails that pushed it all right out of my pretty little head!

[identity profile] greenmask.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well enough about you and our opinions on comics. Let's talk about our boyfriends! giggle!

[identity profile] ashez2ashes.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Models and Divas... ookay Marvel. The models thing could make a funny spoof under the right writer, but that's obviously not where they're going...

[identity profile] unknownscribler.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet Jesus that's fucking hideous!

[identity profile] unknownscribler.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The terrifying thing is that you may be right.

[identity profile] bluefall.insanejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I never know where I fit in all this. Do I creepily stalk and seduce you guys, or run around looking for men to castrate, or sit around with said men grunting and talking about motorcycles and car engines, or what?

[identity profile] greenmask.insanejournal.com 2009-05-20 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I was wondering that as I wrote the boyfriends bit.

I think maybe you sit on tables with a knowing look in your eye, roll your eyes at our troubles, and offer us cigarettes with a sardonic smile?

I can't think where I've seen that sort of trope, but I'm pretty sure that I have.

(And if you swap out the cigarettes for candy sticks, that's the kind of person I'd like to have around.)

[identity profile] rabican.insanejournal.com 2009-05-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, that cover's cool! But no, I do mean something near-identical, not "just" similar in style to the point of being copycat.

[identity profile] luxshine.insanejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
There was a Buffy comic cover in the first series in this exact style, and if I remember where I put my collection, I could scan it...
