Skurge's Last Stand

6 pages of the definitive moment of Walt Simonson's run on the Mighty Thor, the final stand of Skurge the Executioner.

Skurge, sick of being toyed with by Amora (she recently turned him into a tree so he wouldn't interrupt her and Heimdall), has teamed up with Thor, Balder and the Einherjar to journey into Hel itself to take back the souls Hela has stolen from Earth. After regaining the souls there now being pursued by the forces of Hel.

*sniff* Brings a tear to the eye.

I will always say, Skurge went out well. He fell with his honor and dignity in the end. This was very well written and drawn. I hope they leave him alone. He deserved this in the end.

This NEVER gets old, and being as mythic as they come CAN never get old.

The build up is awesome; Skurge's tragically sad self assessment, Balder's acceptance without any sort of argument because he knows it's the best outcome.

But that last page... WOW! The notion that Skurge the Executioner, and Skurge alone, gains ETERNAL respect from Hela... it does indeed bring a manly tear to the eye.

And that last line even SOUNDS like it should be straight from a 12th century folk tale "... and that answer is enough"

I don't care how many times I read it, by the time I get to the panel where he's out of ammunition and still fighting like hell, I get the good kind of chills.

I'm not old enough to have seen this first hand, but this is seriously metal and EPIC. What it must have felt like to hold this in your hands. AWESOME.

This is da good stuff

This is a comic book death. This will always be top five in death scenes.

Chills man, chills.

Yeah, I don't even read Thor and this is one of my favorite bits from comics. I honestly think this should be the climax of, say, a second or third Thor film. Well, maybe not the climax (cause I suppose to some people the hero getting kncoked out while somebody else saves the day might not play well), but at the very least the 'last major battle before the climax'. If handled well, it would be the moment everyone remembers.

Fuckin' A, bubba. Did then, and even now I want to leap out of my seat and yell, "GO OUT HARD, MOTHERFUCKER!"

There wasn't a single page in Thor God-Size that wasn't awesome.

*sniffs* I don't think I'll ever not tear up at these pages. Best Heroic Sacrifice of all time, in my opinion.

I remember this! It last came to mind when I saw D'Argo's last stand in Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars - I kinda thought that was a direct steal from this scene.

Just goes to show what I've said for years, Thor's at it's best when the book reads like Conan.
