Rachel Summers and Kitty Pryde: A Like-Like Story

Okay, so one of my favorite not-really-a-canon-couple couples is Kitty Pryde and Rachel Summers. (I guess her switching it to Grey didn't stick?)

Not there haven't been canon moments that hint at a slightly more intimate relationship. If you look at them in the right way. And are willing to see things that were probably not super intentional. (Then again, Claremont.)

Yeah, late-era Claremont seemed to be hinting rather broadly that either Kitty was bi but in denial about it or Kitty's presence made every woman around her bi. Off the top of my head, you can make a pretty solid case for Kitty/Xi'an, Kitty/Illyana, and Kitty/Rachel.

One of these days I'm going to sit down and read through a big pile of his comics and write some big essay about what he contributed to superhero comics and Marvel and how it's disappointing that he went absolutely bugfuck crazy in 1997 or so.

A case can also perhaps be made for Kitty/Sat-Yr-9 (When Sat was pretending to be Courtney Ross), though that was perhaps more "corrupt, evil, sexually decadent, predator attempts to seduce virginal young girl"

Excalibur met an alternate Kitty Pryde that was named Courtney Ross in an alternate timeline. If there was something to that Kitty Pryde would become the next Sat-Yr-9 or something, it was left vague.

There's a bit about it here, IIRC the idea was that every dimension had one core person, the Saturnyne. It would have been Courtney Ross for 616, but her murder by the Sat-Yr-9 put paid to that, and Kitty was the next in line.

Interesting. As much as I like Alan Davis, it would have made more sense than "Why did Sat-Yr-9 want Kitty Pryde under her sway? Everyone is gay for Kitty!"

Now that you mention it, I'd forgotten that issue of Excalibur where Courtney takes her out to celebrate her (fifteenth god damn) birthday and Kitty ends up licking cake off her finger.

Maybe "forgotten" isn't the word I want. It might be "repressed."

Really? Did they ever interact much, even when they were both in Excalibur?

I'd say that Rahne/Dani or Rahne/Catseye would occur to me long before Rahne/Kitty

And certainly Dani and Catseye were closer, but Catseye is dead and Dani was half a world away

Yeah always saw Kitty as bi (and a bit in denial/repressing about it). There's a panel early in Excalibur that's a clincher for me:

the "boy, I can!" seems too spontaneous and too immediately regretted.

I think that was more of the 'insecure teenager wishes she looked more like an Interdimensional Super-Empowered Sexy Lady (tm) who brings all the boys to the yard, rather than an accidental slip. Given Kitty's personality for years was feeling inadequate around the various X-Men goddesses, that seems about right.

Correct. That statement is taken out of context for what's going on with Kitty at this time. She's feeling very insecure about her body image considering the curvy, busty, sexy Meggan and Rachel on the team. It's a re-occurring theme through out the Alan Davis run of Excalibur. She constantly finds herself in a situation where she's in outfits better suited for busty women and constantly out-shined by the "goddess" types around her. So her expression here is more of a "I'm an ugly duckling surrounded constantly by swans".

How about Kitty/Ororo? Although that one's probably more maternal/mentorial, come to think of it...

I almost mentioned that, but right from the start that relationship's been Kitty as the daughter Ororo never knew she wanted until Kitty came along.
Ororo's almost as bad as Kitty for canonically-supported F/F pairings, but Kitty's not one of them.

(In order, there's Yukio, Jean Grey, arguably Betsy as of the last issue of Uncanny X-Force, and you could make a case for Sue Storm.)
