Villains Being Awesome: Momstique

So, I'm pretty sure I already did a post about Mystique being a mom, but it's worth a second look. Mystique's one consistent good feature is her love for Rogue, though good might be stretching it a bit. It does frequently border on the obsessive and creepy. And stabby. And murder-y.

Chris Claremont made her a bit more sympathetic in X-Men Forever, though still a bit underhanded. She arranged for the two of them to switch powers, allowing Rogue to touch people and Nightcrawler to go out in public without getting hounded.

God, I love the two of them being brother-sisterish at each other.

'course, they did have some moments in the 616.

Aw, creepy hug. Someone's gonna get murdered.

Awesome might be stretching it a bit, but I do like it when Mystique has a more maternal side. Even if it is a bit murder-y.

The "I'm going to turn into a monster" bit, though very cute, doesn't really work, since Rogue was around 13 before she ever met Mystique, after her powers kicked in.

And do you mean she switched Kurt and Anna's powers in X-Men Forever? Because going out in public wasn't really an issue with Kurt, and hadn't been for years, since he either used the image inducer, or just was himself, so barring HIM the ability to ever touch anyone again might be seen as being just as cruel.

X-men Forever picks up where Claremont left off, and I'm not sure if there was an image inducer then.

Also, another factor was 'Mutant Burnout'- in Forever, Mutants have shorter lifespans, with Mystique being one of the few immune, and Kurt due to inheritance. The primary reason for the swap was, this way *both* kids get to (potentially) live long lives.

I do agree that Kurt got the short end of the swap, but considering it saves Rogue in the long run, I think he'd have willingly taken the choice.

And to be fair to Mystique the power switch wasn't the intent IIRC she just wanted a situation that would force Rogue to absorb Kurt's inherited immunity. The power swap was a result of the fact that Rogue's powers were still scrambled from Fabian Cortez's fight with the X-men.

IIRC they even worried that Kurt might not still have his immunity because of the total power swap.

Then forever ended on that really irritating cliff hangar involving Kurt and his fate after touching Thor.

Seems kinda fitting that a story made up of loose plot treads would leave some more in it's wake.

Yes, the image Inducer was around long , long before Claremont left, in fact I believe he invented it.

Still, didn't he have to angst sometimes about not being able to show his face without hiding it behind the inducer and yadda yadda?

Sometimes, but I'm not sure that "Replace my face completely and permanently," was his ideal solution.

Warren Ellis had something to say about that... I think that scene was even posted...

Ah yes, here we go:

Claremont wrote a pretty classic story where Wolvie convinces Nightcrawler to walk into town without disguise. Kurt loved it and got really confident and as far as I know has pretty much kept up with it ever since, unless he needed to be incognito. He has a habit of enchanting ladies he meets in the streets as well. But I'm sure characterization varies over time and even real people can have off days.
