Ms. Marvel #1

The second issue came out on Comixology this week, so this should no longer be the most recent issue. But it was still pretty hard to choose which parts of this to post.

The issue opens in a convenience store, Circle Q, where Kamala and Nakia are talking with their friend (and employee of the store) Bruno.

In walks Zoe Zimmer and Josh [last name unavailable]. Josh extends invitation to a party on the waterfront.

Back at home (presumably after school) Kamala's Avengers fan-fiction is interrupted as she's called to dinner.

Tempers flare, and Kamala goes / is sent to her room. She decides to sneak out to go to the party anyway.

The party does not go well, and Kamala stomps off to go home. However, the Terrigen mists spread over the city and Kamala blacks out, falling unconscious on the sidewalk. She wakes to see Captain Marvel reciting Amir Khusrow's "The Yellow Mustard is Blooming" in Urdu, while Captain America and Iron Man translate it to English. Kamala responds appropriately.

Around 6 2/3 pages of 20.

Same reason that Iron Man is carrying a winged sloth and Cap has a cat smile?

All the animals are part of her hallucination/dream...I think it's just a cutesy thing with no real meaning behind it :)

I LOVED this book so much more than expected...I really wanted to support it anyway but part of me was scared it was gonna be a little PSA with the way Marvel's been hyping it. Kamala and her support cast are awesome, it's very much got an original Spider-Man feel to it with the cast...the writing is really witty and the art is lush. I am really looking forward to #2!

It's really good to see with this title and Mighty Avengers that Marvel are not just making a token effort at representing diversity but really producing quality books :)

This comic looks great!

I love her, "DAAAAAAD" face in that panel during her dinner conversation.

'You must have some kind of weird boot fetish' is my favourite line from this issue, and there are a lot of good ones.

'Delicious, delicious infidel meat' is a close second.

I loved that. I once walked by my daughter at a buffet table (family event thing) and she was saying to someone, "Oh my God, I'm starving. Let me at that tref platter!"

Definitely a great start to the series.

Oh, and if you guys want to get the issue, Marvel recently did a thing for SXSW where the bundled the number one issue for this, All-New X-Men, Nova and New Warriors in one digital issue "All New Marvel Now Teen Heroes," and if you use the promo code "TEEN," you can get the issue for free.

A bit of a change-up, with the Pakistani character (and her family) being the more secular one and the Turkish one being more religious.

Though someone should tell the colorist that Muslim does not equal brown. If Nakia is Turkish, she should be no darker than the Greeks Hercules and Elektra or Italian-American Frank Castle.

That's awesome, I've been wanting to get into All New X-men, even though I already have Ms. Marvel #1

So it worked out okay, right? I wasn't sure if maybe the promo code was dead or not. Still, the actual price for it is 3.99, and for four books, that ain't bad.

In my experience people that have never had pork or bacon always think it smells disgusting. They've never tasted it.

But I get how that opening scene makes the story work. Great writing.

1. Tried to go to freakingcool.com to look up Kamala's fanfic because that would be awesome viral marketing. Sadly the site doesn't exist. :(

2. Love Kamala's Ms. Marvel jacket!

3. Love the panel where her father chastises her brother to get a job. lol

I've lived in Turkey, and I met plenty of browner people over there. Nakia might be mostly Turkish but also have other ancestry; I'm British and caramel-toned, as my maternal grandparents were Sri-Lankan immigrants.

I just love Kamala's mom's reaction to that.

"I didn't understand a single word in that sentence."

We've all had that, When you've tried to explain something you like to your mom and dad and they were like "....what?"
