Well, I suppose it's his turn... a new Thor to debut

With thanks to the marysue website for their coverage of an article on "The View", it would appear that we have a new God of Thunder coming from Asgard...

“Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up. He is no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. And for the first time in history that hammer is being held by a woman,” said Goldberg.

Unfortunately while there was some joking to be had about who the character really is, no hard information was given other than, “The story behind her is she created herself. She was saved by Thor and she came down to Earth, followed him, and made herself look like Thor and so now she’s taking over.”

And Marvel's own PR piece on it is

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Well, here's hoping it's good!

It should be noted that Wonder Woman once held the hammer, and so did Rogue (in a "What If...?" where she'd leeched all the life out of Thor more or less accidentally!

Or maybe marvel could have just put some thought and energy in to making a original female character

Why does it have to be either/or?

Here's hoping if she gets the Eric Masterson/Beta Ray Bill Treatment that she sticks around instead of dying like Eric or being consigned to just the occasional guest bit like Bill.

I get that. I really do. I am just bitter that my favorite female characters won't get the chance to shine in the spotlight.

And I am having a hard time trusting that FemThor isn't going to get tossed in the trash heap the moment Thor 3 of Avengers 2 hits theaters.

That's exactly what's gonna happen. Thor Odinson will make a return to coincide with a movie and this character will become fem-thor or someone no one really gives a damn about with a storyline no one gives a damn about...Or she'll be fridged

Yeah... it makes me wonder why they even bothered in the first place.

I wonder how many people even remember Thunderstrike?

well, I do. And I thought that at one point his book was outselling Thor

Defalco claims it was outselling Thor and the Avengers combined at the time it was cancelled. He claims that Thunderstrike, Warmachine and the 2099 books were canned because someone higher up believed that they were hurting the core book sales so Thor's sales would go up if Thunderstrike was canned and Spiderman sales would go up if Spiderman 2099 was cancelled. Ironman would go up if War machine was cancelled. Stuff like that.

Distributor numbers from the time period do not back up the claim he made so it might have been hyperbole. Or perhaps he was refering to direct subscription sales.
Edited (Forgot Warmachine in his complaint so added it and the bit about Ironman's sales going up if it was cancelled.) 2014-07-15 22:25 (UTC)

THIS! For Arceus' sake this!

I'm sick and tired of people pretending that creating a new character isn't done or that it invalidates the boost to representation that modifying a main line character does.

Specially when it is a character like Thor whose gender is pretty much inrelevant in its character's arcs.

I'd say the Kate Bishop Hawkeye from Young Avengers could serve as a model of how to do such a character's introduction and eventual sharing of the name with its originator well.

That seems like work. Who has time for work, when you're busy being creative?
