Character you wish to come back from the dead

To me, the aftermath of the death of Ares was handled badly. Not that he died as he lived; hitting things with an axe, but that neither his son Phobos nor Norman Osborn avenged him. Phobos was shown in Siege as being denied permission to travel to Asgard by Nick Fury, and we all know that Chekov says that a God of Fear shown on the mantelpiece in the first act must be used to kill somebody in the third act.

Or, Bendis could have used Norman Osborn to pacify The sentry, especially considering the relationship that developed between the two of them in the best scene that Bendis ever wrote at Marvel.

Either way, ares died and it was sad

But while he lived, he was amazing.

Ares in Incredible Hercules

Ares in Dark Avengers: Ares
This is where Norman OSborn decided to use his own God of War to train up some soldiers and see what he got.

Ares in Dark Avengers/X-Men Utopia

I am not a man in the business of repeating myself, so I suggest you all pay attention.

There is a line before me that demarcates where you stop being treated as citizens and where you start being treated as soldiers.

It is a line that only I can see and I swear unto all of you - once you cross it, you have declared war. Against your city, against your government… and against me. And make no mistake: I love to fight wars.

Plus there was that time when he set himself on fire to defeat Mikaboshi's army

Well, Wolverine is dead, which puts a damper on it.

Wait, is he still dead?

Yeah, Ares was great. Too bad he reached his zenith in the mini, and Bendis could never really manage to reach the same level. Which seems to have been a reoccurring theme for him, taking a character from a mini he liked and trying to write them himself, usually not quite getting why the minis were likable. Though Hood is the better example for this, Bendis' Ares still kinda worked. The mini was just better.

I love how Herc's all like "yeah, sure thing"
to the idea of a guy catching himself on fire to throw himself at the enemy.

It makes every sense; they're fighting Oriental powers, and everyone knows that ninjas can't grab you if you're on fire (there's even a t-shirt).

Ares and Wonderman should've teamed up more often.

Ares speech to his recruits makes me cringe everytime.

There are parts that make sense and parts that are just dumb. Like, "having enough bullets before going into battle" and "chain of command."

Why yes Ares, even in your time, those kinds of things would be highly valued in the military (okay, not bullets, but you get the idea).

Bendis over-reached on the metaphor.

I actually think it kind of makes sense. In Greek myth Ares is generally the worse God of War, and kind of a fuck up. Whenever he and Athena compete Ares is the one who loses in the end, so having the vital but unglamorous stuff be Athena's domain fits that narrative.

Yeah, Ares is the one who'd be hacking at the giant monster's nose with his axe while it's chewing on him, whereas Athena would be peppering it with spears or arrows from a distance until she brought it down.
