People keep saying this is trying too hard, but as far as I care it's trying hard and getting it.

I find the series working for me if I can simply imagine Howard as a brand new character with very little history other than what's needed for the occasional situation. Also helps to imagine it out of continuity.

Well it's in continuity and it works. Shit, this issue even made a great reference to the first series.
