DC Sneak Peek: Robin: Son of Batman

robinsonofbatmansneakpeek01

"Obviously, with the events spilling out of Batman #40, things are definitely going to be different for everyone in Gotham! But for Damian, we'll focus on his world that stretches far beyond the city. Also we'll look back into his past to see what it means to his future.

I'm interested in unwrapping the layers about how Damian sees himself and what it means to be the "Son of Batman." Talk about pressure! Think about it. No one else can claim that legacy. It is what truly defines Damian and makes him unique as a Robin.

Those others are his wards. This one's his son.

Which doesn't they aren't *like* sons to him, but technically and legally they aren't.

Except for how Dick, Tim and Cass were legally adopted by Bruce prior to the reboot, so yeah, they're legally his kids.

I don't know about Jason's status, but he was always treated as if he was Bruce's kid as well.

Pre and post Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dick was his ward, Jason was his adopted son (Dick and Bruce discuss that during Donna Troy's wedding) and Tim had no formal link to Bruce, except as Bruce being the neighhbour next door who kept an eye on Tim whilst his dad was in hospital.

Post Zero hour, Dick is mentioned as having been adopted (reflecting the difference between what a single man could be in the 1940's and the 1990's), but that was later casually ignored for the sake of the Gotham Knights story where Bruce legally adopts Dick as an adult. Jason is still adopted, and Tim is eventually adopted.

New 52 it's terribly unclear as they seem to keep changing their mind within weeks of a story coming out, so IIRC Nightwing #0 had Dick seemingly not being a part of Brue's life, but operating as Robin out of a care home, and then he's back to living at Wayne Manor in the more recent Nightwing Annual.

I thought they ret-conned the 'ward' thing...

...and just changed it to 'adopted'...or was that retconned too? Plus, I think Damian refers to them as this brothers or at least refers to Dick as his brother.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the status is in the New 52.

I think it depends on the reality.
