"Obviously, with the events spilling out of Batman #40, things are definitely going to be different for everyone in Gotham! But for Damian, we'll focus on his world that stretches far beyond the city. Also we'll look back into his past to see what it means to his future.

I'm interested in unwrapping the layers about how Damian sees himself and what it means to be the "Son of Batman." Talk about pressure! Think about it. No one else can claim that legacy. It is what truly defines Damian and makes him unique as a Robin.

Where did Damien get a giant...whatever that is?

Sheesh, I remember when Nightwing had to deny he was in the Titans, and Batman insisted that time travel was impossible...

He summoned it with the Bat-whistle which is our generation's bat-shark-repellent.

Getting tired of Damian's title "Son of Batman"....are adopted kids just not apart of your legacy at Dc or something? I also hate hearing it in Batman:Bat Blood , with Dick saying Bruce is his older brother(Yes, that line is referencing it from Morrison's Batman and Robin, but still). Dick has always been portrayed as Bruce's son, and in both the pre and new 52(especially in the New 52), it's always portrayed that Jason consider's Bruce to be his only father figure. I like Damien, I just don't like this DNA makes you more of a family member.

Very much agreed that it seems to be a reflection of DC's "Blood will out" thing whereby the son of a villain MUST turn evil (Like, say Jericho, who had been a hero for years until possessed by a monster and ended up dying, but was suddenly all out evil when he was brought back... or Captain Boomerang Jr. who had a redemption arc completely derailed for "Blackest Night" or Kon worrying about being half Lex Luthor etc).

If Dick and Jason (and Tim, though to a lesser extent since he had his own father for longer) aren't also "Son's of the Bat" then I don't know who is

I remember Jericho pleading for his father to kill him before he hurt his friends

Truly, there is no greater evil than that in fiction

*cough*

Though, Icon, I'd add Cassandra Cain, and Windfall to the list (of which I had a copy somewhere).

I think the reason why there isn't one in DCnu yet is simply because no character's had time to reform

I'd forgotten about Cassandra, and I successfully managed to forget an evil Windfall ecisted beyond the duplicate that New Wave created a long, long time ago.

Dunno how you can forget Cass, shame on you!

As for Windfall, not surprised. They revealed she turned evil because she was raped, and then killed an issue later.

Who wouldn't wanna forget that?

-or Captain Boomerang Jr. who had a redemption arc completely derailed for "Blackest Night" -

That made *so* much negative sense.

Those others are his wards. This one's his son.

Which doesn't they aren't *like* sons to him, but technically and legally they aren't.

Except for how Dick, Tim and Cass were legally adopted by Bruce prior to the reboot, so yeah, they're legally his kids.

I don't know about Jason's status, but he was always treated as if he was Bruce's kid as well.

Pre and post Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dick was his ward, Jason was his adopted son (Dick and Bruce discuss that during Donna Troy's wedding) and Tim had no formal link to Bruce, except as Bruce being the neighhbour next door who kept an eye on Tim whilst his dad was in hospital.

Post Zero hour, Dick is mentioned as having been adopted (reflecting the difference between what a single man could be in the 1940's and the 1990's), but that was later casually ignored for the sake of the Gotham Knights story where Bruce legally adopts Dick as an adult. Jason is still adopted, and Tim is eventually adopted.

New 52 it's terribly unclear as they seem to keep changing their mind within weeks of a story coming out, so IIRC Nightwing #0 had Dick seemingly not being a part of Brue's life, but operating as Robin out of a care home, and then he's back to living at Wayne Manor in the more recent Nightwing Annual.

I thought they ret-conned the 'ward' thing...

...and just changed it to 'adopted'...or was that retconned too? Plus, I think Damian refers to them as this brothers or at least refers to Dick as his brother.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the status is in the New 52.
From: [personal profile] 7dialsmystery
I think it depends on the reality.

Beyond all the "who's Bruce's son and who isn't" talk, this book has been pretty awesome from start to finish.
